20-21 artist scoops Northern Art Prize

Leo Fitzmaurice, whose sculptures are on show as part of the centre’s Beyond Pattern exhibition, bagged the £16,500 award last night at a glitzy ceremony at Leeds Art Gallery.

The prize celebrates artists working in the North of England and featured a shortlist of leading artists with international reputations.

Often working with everyday materials, Liverpool-based Leo has created sculptures using leaflets, posters and flyers for the exhibition. He visited 20-21 in November to install a series of sculptures made using magazines and flyers for this exhibition.

Beyond Pattern is major exhibition organised by the Oriel Davies gallery featuring some of the top emerging talent from the UK’s contemporary art scene.

It has been shown at galleries across the country and includes 11 artists whose work explores the cultural meanings of pattern.

Artworks include sculptures and installations based on the patterns found in tights, carpets and printed fabrics.

Among the other exhibits is Non Sum Qualis Eram, an extraordinary installation featuring 28 life size bishop-like figures by London-based artist Doug Jones.

Other artists include Steve Messam, Catherine Bertola, Angharad Pearce-Jones, Michael Brennand-Wood, Nisha Duggal, Adam King, Pamela So, Henna Nadeem and Andrea Stokes.

Beyond Pattern is on display until 25 February. 20-21 Visual Arts Centre is in Church Square, Scunthorpe, and is open from Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and entry is free.

The exhibition has been developed by support from Arts Council of Wales, the National Lottery through Arts Council England and The Laura Ashley Foundation.
