What's on

East Lindsey Live launches

An exciting programme of culture is set for the East Lindsey district in 2012.

East Lindsey Live, a calendar of exciting sporting, heritage and cultural events to showcase the District and attract visitors, has been officially launched with East Lindsey District Council announcing that 39 local events and venues have received accreditation and will be complemented by a programme of street theatre and cultural events in the district’s market towns, which include the visit of the Lionheart Project.

High profile events at venues such as Cadwell Park and Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre have been accredited as have smaller productions such as Horncastle Young Stages, the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival and Louth Film Club.

All accredited events will receive marketing support and inclusion on the new East Lindsey Live website which is now live at http://www.eastlindseylive.org

The local events, all of which enhance education and lifelong learning; grow the local economy; improve health and wellbeing; and create volunteering and community involvement opportunities, feature in a broad programme of free art and cultural events, with some of the UK’s best artists, musicians, dancers and street theatre performers also set to visit East Lindsey.

The Pig , a short show full of surprises, which takes place in the belly of a 30 foot long sleeping pig, is sure to draw attention when it appears in the District’s market towns, as will the return of Granny Turismo – the three anarchic grandmas who’s motorised, souped-up shopping trolleys equipped with beat boxes took last year’s SO Festival in Skegness by storm.

Other street performances confirmed for SO Festival week and East Lindsey Live include:

•Bruce Airhead : a metamorphosis of man and six-foot balloon

•The Birds : impressive and magnificent albino peacocks

•The Angels : Jeff, Terry and Wayne will bring their golden tresses, neon halos and trumpets!

•The Deep Sea Divers : two divers wearing large corroded copper helmets squirting jets of water and draped with sea-weed and crabs

•Man In A Box : a giant box which leaps into life, grows legs and totters off to meet and greet the crowds.

•Farmer Giles will be offering advice on everything from farming (about which he knows little) to philosophy (about which he knows less) while leaning over his mobile five bar gate

•Naked Lunch : two gastronomically challenged culinary wizards will cook up a tune on the world’s first Frying Pan Xylophone

•Hot Dinners : Saxophone, sousaphone, trumpet, accordion and drums will come together to play a selection of tasty ska, calypso, reggae and rock ‘n’ roll tunes

•Joyous Jamboree : Val and Babs are joined by ‘Wendy Willing’ and ‘Mable Able’ as they stage a fully interactive Swank Camp installation, complete with bivouacs, flagpoles and camp fire

•Helter Skelter : A troupe of curious characters will perform a colourful and stunningly choreographed movement

•The Vegetable Nannies : Wheeling an ancient Victorian pram laden with a prized collection of vegetables, the Nannies are out for the day, showing off their allotment cherubs

The programme of street theatre will feature alongside The Big Dance Programme, with dance groups across Lincolnshire being encouraged to bring their jazz, tap, contemporary and latin dance performances to the district.

East Lindsey Live is also set to welcome the Lionheart Project. The three, nine metre long crocheted lions, which have taken over two years to create, will visit Louth between 23rd and 26th June and Skegness on 27th June as part of a national tour. It has also been confirmed that the Olympic Flame will travel through 13 communities in East Lindsey on 27th June as it makes its way to the Olympic Stadium for the opening of London 2012.

As well as introducing East Lindsey Live, East Lindsey District Council has maintained its support for SO Festival, which this year will become a week-long, district-wide programme from 23rd June to 1st July.

As a result of East Lindsey District Council’s support of the Cultural Olympiad over recent years and its successful track record of delivering high quality cultural events, such as SO Festival, East Lindsey Live has attracted national attention, with both the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport and Ruth Mackenzie, Director of the Cultural Olympiad both praising East Lindsey Live.

Jeremy Hunt said: “East Lindsey has completely captured the sporting and cultural excitement of London 2012. Their programme of 39 fantastic events will bring a real sense of celebration to the area. It’s a great example of what can be done, and I hope that many other communities follow their lead in making the most of this once-in-alifetime event.”

The Minister’s comments are echoed by Ms Mackenzie, who said: "East Lindsey District Council has been a great supporter of the Cultural Olympiad for many years, as its many Inspire mark events and SO Festival brand illustrate. It is fantastic to see that they have recognised the positive impact that arts, sports and culture has on well-being and the local economy.

“I'm sure East Lindsey Live will be a fantastic calendar of quality events and create numerous opportunities for East Lindsey residents to see unique and engaging working of arts; be involved in sporting activities; and learn new skills through the many volunteering initiatives that this enviable and exciting initiative will bring.”

Speaking at the launch of East Lindsey Live, Leader of East Lindsey District Council, Cllr Doreen Stephenson said: “This is the biggest, most exciting and engaging project we have ever undertaken and we hope it will give our economy a real boost. 2012 is going to be an amazing year and one that people will talk about for many years to come, not just because of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games but because of everything that is taking place in the build up to the games.

“As you can see from the programme we’ve announced today East Lindsey Live will offer something for everyone and will see local events, venues and performers working alongside nationally acclaimed artists, who will bring their acts to the district.”

East Lindsey Live is still seeking events to add to its exciting and diverse programme.

Events accredited to East Lindsey Live receive considerable marketing support, including a page on the official website – http://www.eastlindseylive.org/, and are able to use the East Lindsey Live logo on their own marketing material to highlight that they are a high quality event that will enhance education and lifelong learning; grow the local economy; improve health and wellbeing; and create volunteering and community involvement opportunities.

The application process is quick, easy and free. Event organisers simply need to visit http://www.eastlindseylive.org/ and download a form.
