South Holland symphony project with London Mozart Players

Music enthusiasts are being urged to join in an exciting new venture to compose an exclusive piece for the district - the South Holland Symphony.

Workshops involving members of the community are being held from February 2012 to create a sound in harmony with the heart and soul of the Fens.

London Mozart Players and South Holland District Council, with support from Orchestras Live and Arts Council England, are launching the project to give local people the opportunity to take part.

This follows a highly successful residency in South Holland, by the London Mozart Players, which finished in 2010.

The finished South Holland Symphony will last 30 minutes with three movements representing a different area of the district. Inspiration can be taken from the landscape, a building, local history, a famous event or person; anything that the local people feel characterises and represents their community and area.

Councillor Nick Worth, SHDC Executive Member for the Arts, said: “This is an exciting and innovative project that will give local people the unique opportunity to produce a South Holland Symphony that is inspired from their vision of the local area, be that buildings, people or the landscape. A great opportunity to show off our culture and untapped musical talent.”

The South Holland Symphony Project, led by Duncan Chapman, a composer, sound artist and educator based in Lincoln, is a series of workshops and concerts, starting in February 2012 and will culminate in the South Holland Symphony being performed by the London Mozart Players in the South Holland Centre as part of an orchestral concert on 19th July 2012.

Duncan said: “My ideas for this piece centre on the idea of making something that celebrates and marks the uniqueness and distinctiveness of place. I am thinking of a work that takes particular landscapes and people as its starting point and uses them to generate musical ideas that will be played by the LMP. As a composer who lives in Lincolnshire, I am very excited at the possibility of my work, which usually happens everywhere in the world but Lincolnshire, happening on my doorstep.

“The three movements of the South Holland Symphony will each represent a different area of the district. Inspiration will be taken from the landscape, a building, local history, a famous event or person; anything that people feel characterises and represents their community and area.”

A DVD video of the performance will then be toured around the district via the District Council’s rural touring cinema, enabling a large number of residents to experience the final piece.

The first two concerts include the London Mozart Players Chamber Ensemble performing the Mozart and Brahms Clarinet Quintets, featuring Principal Clarinet Angela Malsbury, as well as a composition taster session with Duncan Chapman to introduce the project to the audience and encourage their involvement.

These will be at Gosberton Methodist Church on Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 at 7:30 pm and Holbeach Methodist Church – Friday, February 24th, 2012, both starting at 7.30pm.

Composition Workshops will take place on Saturday, February 25th. Four further concerts with associated workshops will follow in March, April & May.

Tickets for the concerts are available from your local concert venue and the South Holland Centre on 01775 764777 at www.southhollandcentre.co.uk
