New showcase for Stamford's story
Visitors and residents alike can Discover Stamford at the town’s new heritage attraction - and 300 people have done just that on the opening day.
A new heritage hub has opened at Stamford Library. Called Discover Stamford, the hub features fantastic objects, stories and images that tell the town’s story, occupying the library’s entrance hall and community room.
Councillor Eddy Poll, Executive Member for Cultural Services, said: “With Discover Stamford, the key stories of this unique town are brought to life. You’ll see how the people of Stamford have lived, worked and played over the years and find out why it’s regarded as one of England’s finest stone towns, attracting visitors from far and wide.
“The centrepiece is the fantastic Stamford Tapestry. Completed in the year 2000, this 20ft long work of art traces the history of the town, with a magnifying light on hand to help visitors study it in detail.
“The hub is the ideal way to discover Stamford’s rich heritage, and hopefully visitors will be inspired to go out and explore the town for themselves, where a stroll through the streets provides a walk through 1,000 years of history.”
The heritage hub will stand alongside a new exhibition in the town hall with a heritage trail linking these collections with buildings and other historical attractions around the town.
