Jubilee picnic in Boston
It’s official… Boston’s big day for celebrating The Queen’s diamond jubilee will be Bank Holiday Monday 4th June, in Central Park.
The Big Jubilee Picnic in the Park will be held from 10am to 4pm and will be a relaxed, fun-filled and joyous occasion for all ages from the entire town community.
An open invitation is now issued to all town residents to come along, bring their picnics, be entertained, join in the entertainment and make Boston’s free event a day to remember – joining in with the rest of the nation in commemorating the 60-year reign of our Queen.
Organisers from Boston Town Area Committee (BTAC) have been working with the Boston Standard which will run a reader competition to choose a Jubilee Queen and Jubilee Princess for the event. Details about this will be announced shortly in the Standard. There will be prizes for the winners and the Jubilee Queen and Princess will join Cllr Yvonne Gunter in declaring the Big Jubilee Picnic in the Park officially open.
They have also been working with the Boston Target and Edwards Emporium, the traditional sweet shop in Dolphin Lane, to run a competition for 60 lucky children to win special diamond jubilee goody bags stuffed full of sweets.
Full details will be announced shortly in the Target, but there will be ten winners on the hour, every hour in Central Park throughout the entire day.
And Boston’s own community radio station, Endeavour Radio, will provide music and announcements throughout the day, broadcasting from the park.
BTAC, the town’s parish council, has set up a jubilee celebrations working group to organise the event. Cllr Gunter, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for leisure services, parks and open spaces, will join with the Mayor of Boston on the day to officially switch on the commemorative Queen’s diamond jubilee fountain, which will be built as the centrepiece of an attractive new walkway garden in Central Park.
Cllr Gunter said: “The fountain will be a lasting memorial to our Queen, and to what we all hope will be a great day out for the community.”
The committee has already been making arrangements for a range of entertainment, including live music, karaoke to feature the number one hits down the years since The Queen’s accession, dancing, traditional sports with special jubilee medals for the winners, games, displays and a special world-record attempt.
Some limited refreshment will be available, but the emphasis is on town residents bringing along their own picnics, picnic blankets or picnic tables and chairs to enjoy a traditional day of relaxation and fun.
