Caistor in Bloom encourages schools to grow
Following their recent success in the regional East Midlands in Bloom ‘Best Large Village’ competition, the Gold Award winning Caistor in Bloom team have now embarked on a new scheme.
The team are now focusing on the safeguarding of hundreds of young vegetable gardeners and food producers of the future, with a scheme which they hope will enable more young people throughout the region to successfully take part in vegetable growing clubs within primary and senior schools, children’s centres, nurseries and Sure Start centres.
The Growing Clubs Planner is a joint collaboration between Caistor in Bloom, the Specialist Health Promotion Team, Food for Fitness, North East Lincolnshire Care Trust Plus, NELC and Change 4 Life and also promotes healthy eating with a range of nutritious and delicious recipes using the vegetables grown with help from the planner.
“We’ve visited dozens schools in the area over the last few years”, said Ernie Brown, President of Caistor in Bloom and creator of the vegetable growing planner, “And nearly all of them have growing clubs run by hard pressed but keen volunteers. This innovative, easy to understand concise guide will hopefully help them to grow stronger and healthier veg in the future”.
The planner gives all the information that any burgeoning growing club would need to ‘grow their own’, in a simple calendar form, following the school year from September through until August.
“We all need a little help when we’re starting on a new project and we hope that the hints, tips and advice on when to sow, grow and harvest, within this planner, will give youngsters throughout our region a successful and productive start to their growing futures. The simple straightforward design of the planner should provide the growing clubs at schools, nurseries, Sure Starts and Childrens centres with the knowledge and confidence to take on healthy growing tasks. Then maybe.....just maybe, they too will grow with confidence, self esteem and pride in their achievements”, continued Mr Brown.
Caistor schools have now received a planner and with help and advice from Caistor in Bloom volunteers should ensure a very successful growing season for 2011/12.
Caistor in Bloom Group is a not for profit community organisation run by volunteers and funded purely by donations from the local community, council and businesses. To help, donate or for more information, visit www.caistorinbloom.co.uk
