The Great Australian Breakfast in Lincoln

The Great Australian Breakfast has raised approximately £70,000 for charity over the last 20 years.

First held in 1991, the Great Australian Breakfast takes place on the Sunday closest to Australia Day (26th January), to mark the city’s twinning relationship with Port Lincoln in Australia. This year’s event takes place between 8.30am to 12.30pm on Sunday 29th January at The Lawn on Union Road in Lincoln.

Traditionally, the food and refreshments for the full English breakfast served at the event are donated by local businesses, and all proceeds go to charity. This is split equally between the Mayor’s chosen charities and the charities supported by BBC Lincolnshire and the Lincolnshire Echo, which both sponsor the breakfast.

This year, the Right Worshipful, the Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Kathleen Brothwell, is raising money for Lincoln Women’s Aid, a charity whose mission is to protect women and children in Lincolnshire from domestic abuse. In previous years, the Mayor’s charities have included:

* B.A.B.I.E.S. County Hospital Special Care Baby Unit

* Lincoln Women's Aid

* Pelican Trust

* Lincoln Cathedral Fabric Fund

* Weirfield Wildlife Hospital

* Alzheimers' Society

* Breast Cancer Unit at County Hospital

* Lincoln Cathedral Music Fund

* Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance

* Lincoln Cardiac Support Group

* Army Benevolent Fund

* Royal British Legion

This year, entertainment will be provided by the City of Lincoln Band, who will be starting the day with their rendition of the Australian National Anthem, the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Concert Band will perform from 10am till 11am, and at 11am the ever-popular folk group Ploughman’s Bunch will take to the stage.

BBC Lincolnshire’s Melvin Prior will compere the event, and other BBC Lincolnshire personalities will be on hand to dish up the full English breakfast and meet the public.

The Mayor of Lincoln, Councillor Kathleen Brothwell said: “I am very much looking forward to the Great Australian Breakfast and celebrating its 21st year. The event brings people together in celebration of our twinning relationship with Port Lincoln. It’s always good fun, and I hope Lincoln people come out in force to support it once more, raising much needed funds for local and national charities.”

Tickets for the Great Australian Breakfast 2012 cost £4 for adults and £2.50 for children. As usual, Australian passport holders are fed for free!

Bacon – AT Events

Eggs – Noble Foods
