School chef wins regional heat

School chef, Audrey Harris has won the Yorkshire and Humber School Chef of the Year competition 2012 in Hull.

Audrey works at St Bedes RC School and created her inventive menu with the produce grown by the pupils in their school garden.

Audrey went up against two other school chefs to win her place in the School Chef of the Year 2012 final, the competition is organised annually by the Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA).

Audrey had 90 minutes to prepare a two-course meal suitable for an 11-year-old and costs no more than £1.25.

Her menu comprised of a tortilla chicken basket, sauté potatoes and salad for main and a strawberry mousse served with shortbread fingers for dessert.

The cook-off took place in front of a panel of judges, including two pupils from a primary school in Hull.

Audrey will showcase her culinary skills at the national final in May against nine other top school chefs from across Great Britain.

School Chef of the Year is a culinary event exclusively for those in the education-catering sector and aims to showcase the high standards of skill, creativity and professionalism amongst school caterers.

Audrey Harris, said: "Getting to the grand final is a real credit to the school and its pupils, they have grown their own produce which they bring to my kitchen and I use in our school meals.

"I am delighted to make it this far using our home grown fruits and vegetables, we are very proud of the quality food we offer our pupils."

Sharon Seddon, Head of Catering and Cleaning at the council said: “This is a very prestigious event and really showcases what our local school cooks are capable of and the great quality food that is on offer to pupils within North Lincolnshire Schools.”

Cllr Nigel Sherwood, cabinet member for Highways and Neighbourhoods at North Lincolnshire Council, said: “I am delighted that Audrey has won the regional heats of this competition using fresh, local produce grown by the pupils themselves.

"It highlights the excellent school meals service that is provided in North Lincolnshire. I wish her good luck in the national final."
