Superfast Broadband for 31,000 homes in Lincolnshire
Could this be a sign that Lincolnshire will finally receive internet speeds comparable to those elsewhere in the country?
The City's exchange has announced they will be rolling out fibre optic wire to offer super fast broadband to around 31,000 homes in the Lincoln City area, including any and all businesses in the city. This will include the small village of Bracebridge Heath, who suffer from notoriously slow internet connections. BT however have conceded that on initial set-up a small minority of houses will be unable to connect, due to the costs of deployment and the advanced topography of the fibre optics.
This new instalment should see broadband speeds of around 40 megabits per second, potentially increasing to 60mbps. Ruth Carver of the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership said “The news is great for both residents and businesses in Lincoln. It will put Lincoln on par with other super fast broadband areas in the country, and will be a major help for businesses to become more competitive and grow, and will increase Lincolnshire's competitiveness for inward investors.”
High speed, reliable broadband, has been at the top of the business wish list in the Lincolnshire and Yorkshire areas for some time, and it seems that Lincoln City at least is benefiting for them. Other companies in other areas will undoubtedly be forced to wait in hope that the same deal will be offered to them soon.
This whole deal is part of a £2.5 billion investment being made nationally. It is also worth noting that Lincolnshire County Council has secured two £750,000 broadband trials in two, as of yet undisclosed, villages in Lincolnshire. The hope is to test availability and demand, and convince internet providers that there is profit to be made in Lincolnshire, should they invest here.
