Urgent funding required to prevent flood catastrophe

Lincolnshire County Council to lobby Government to pay for coastal flood defences for Lincolnshire

Currently flooding poses the second largest risk to the entire country, and this is solely because Lincolnshire’s coastline is so under threat. It’s estimated that over 40% of the entire country’s fruit and vegetable production takes place in Lincolnshire, and it is one of the most agricultural areas in the UK. As such a large flood could set back the food production of the country for years. As such the LCC is now lobbying the central Government to provide flood defence systems for the entire area.

The last great flood to hit Lincolnshire was in 1953, and it took the lives of 43 people, as well as causing millions in property damage. Currently over 100,000 homes are in the red zone, an area which places them at high risk. The possible danger is so high that many insurance companies are warning that individuals might not even be able to afford realistic cover within the next few years.

Lincolnshire already has a flood wall on more than 77 miles of coastline, yet weather conditions are continuing to get worse across the country year upon year. And it is estimated that the sea level could increase by an incredible 75cm at the of the year.
