Who are the unsung heroes?
The hunt is on for inspirational unsung heroes in Lincoln worthy of a Mayoral Medal or the Silver Arrow award.
Every year, the Mayor of Lincoln presents up to six Mayoral Medals to people who have worked tirelessly for others without any recognition. These are unsung heroes, voluntary workers, charity fundraisers and club organisers who give up their own time to help improve the city.
Mayoral Medals were originally presented by the Mayor to those returning to the city from the First World War thanking them for their service. Last year, Susan Grace and Cassandra Jameson were awarded Mayoral Medals for their work in the community.
Susan helped to start the Birchwood and Hartsholme Country Park Advisory Groups, chairing both groups and helping to develop the parks for the community, getting involved in new projects and popular annual events. She also raised funds for signs and publicity opportunities in both parks, all whilst recovering from a serious illness.
Cassandra has been fund-raising for a number of years, during which time she has raised thousands for countless local and national charities including Ruston Ward at Lincoln County Hospital, St. Barnabas Hospice, the NSPCC and Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance – which she chose to support after receiving help from crews following a serious horse riding accident.
Sponsored by the Lincoln Lions, the Silver Arrow award was introduced in 2009 to recognise young individuals or groups who have achieved something significant. There are three categories for nominations - individual under 13 years old, individual 13-18 years old and team up to 18 years old.
Crafted by a local silversmith and using 500 year-old wood from Lincoln Cathedral, the Silver Arrow award symbolises an arrow that was fired by Robin Hood, which can be seen in the Guildhall.
In 2011, brother and sister Bradley and Kelly were awarded the Silver Arrow award for their bravery following the loss of their mum Jackie, who was cared for by St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice, and their inspirational work with the Light up a Life celebrations.
The Right Worshipful, the Mayor of Lincoln Councillor Kathleen Brothwell said: “The Mayoral Medals and Silver Arrow award seek out those people in our communities who work very hard, day after day for the benefit of others. These people are often very humble and rarely accept praise, despite making real differences in people’s lives. We would love to honour a great bunch of people this year, acknowledging their hard work and thanking them for being such inspirational people.”
