Girl's cricket in Caistor is a success
Girl’s cricket in Caistor has been a huge success thanks to funding from Sportivate.
Lincolnshire Cricket secured £287 to enable local coaches Neil Wheeler, Colin Holman and Beth Smith to run a 14 – 15 year old ‘Girls into Cricket’ project at Caistor Yarborough School with 15 local teenage girls attending.
The coaches took the players through drills and games to develop their skills or for some of them, who had never played before, introduce them to the game. The 15 players will now compete in a Lady Taverners match against De Aston School; the winners of which will play in the county final later this month. Lady Taverners is an indoor competition run nationally by the English Cricket Board (ECB) to increase participation of teenage girls.
Rachael Dyer, Lincolnshire Cricket Board Women and Girls Development Officer, said: “Seeing 15 girls at the final sessions was fantastic. The project engaged with new participants and retained their interest, and it was really pleasing to see more talented players in Lincolnshire.”
Although the Sportivate sessions have now officially ended, the girls have requested that the school continues to run the club after school.
Lucy Blakey, Children and Young People’s Officer at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “I’m really pleased that young girls in Caistor have been inspired to try a new sport and continue playing – it’s fantastic that the school will continue the sessions and a great opportunity for Caistor Cricket Club. Sportivate is a great incentive for clubs and organisations, but it’s main aim is to deliver more sport across Lincolnshire and the ‘Girls into Cricket’ project does exactly that.”
