Schools excited by Jubilee celebrations
Schools countrywide have been rushing to snap up a Lincolnshire business’ Royal Jubilee tree planting packs.
Treesandhedging.co.uk, which has teamed up with the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society to offer schools the chance to celebrate the Jubilee by planting 10,000 “free” trees, said the initiative has caused excitement among teachers and pupils.
Directors at Treesandhedging.co.uk decided to share their passion for getting young people interested in gardening and the world around them, by giving away the trees – in packs, each containing five saplings. Director Zoe Henderson says, “We know that lots of individuals and organisations are thinking of ways to mark the Jubilee and we felt that teaming up with the RHS would be an excellent way to help schools to mark this historic occasion. Schools registered with the RHS Campaign for School Gardening have been encouraged to make the most of this offer by visiting www.treesandhedging.co.uk. We are looking to supply up to two thousand schools and we had a great response during January. However, other schools still have the chance to benefit because this offer will remain open throughout February – unless our stocks run out first!"
Orders for the school packs are being received from many different areas, including Wales and Northern Ireland. Zoe Henderson says, “What is particularly special about our link-up with the RHS is that schools have to register with the Society’s School Gardening Campaign to get these trees. This means that teachers and young people will be able to tap into the RHS’ expertise in the future, which can only be a good thing.”
Treesandhedging.co.uk has chosen a special set of bareroot saplings for The RHS Schools Jubilee Promotion Pack of Five Trees. They include the popular and colourful Wild Cherry, Crab Apple, Silver Birch, Hornbeam and Field Maple. Zoe Henderson says, “All are native to the UK and are recognised for their attractiveness and heritage. The saplings are free to RHS Campaign for School Gardening member schools – they just need to pay £5.95 in postage and packing."
Schools not yet registered with the Campaign can do so for free by visiting www.rhs.org.uk/schoolgardening. RHS Campaign for School Gardening co-ordinator Suzanne Love says, “We are pleased with the interest shown by schools in the promotional trees packs and the fact that this initiative is encouraging more schools to join the 15,000 which are already members of our campaign.”
