Who are Lincolnshire's finest citizens?
People in Lincolnshire who play an important, voluntary role in their local communities are to be celebrated, as the popular Good Citizens Awards return for 2012.
This is your chance to nominate those who give up their time and efforts for free to help others and the community. People who might otherwise not get the recognition they deserve.
Councillor Robert Palmer, vice-chairman of Lincolnshire County Council, said: “It’s your chance to honour those extraordinary people whose voluntary contributions make noticeable differences to people throughout Lincolnshire. Of course, they don’t do it for reward. But the hugely positive impact they have on people’s lives should be recognised. So, I urge everyone to nominate their Good Citizen for 2012.”
It could be someone who looks after an elderly, disabled or disadvantaged person for no reward; a dedicated charity fundraiser; or perhaps someone who gives up their free time to help young people in their community – the choice is yours. All that matters is that they’ve voluntarily made a real difference to the lives of others.
The awards come in three categories: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (aged 16 or below), and Community Group of the Year.
Last year, Caroline Feit from Ludford took the Citizen of the Year prize; 16 year-old Jess Forbes from Boston was named Young Citizen of the Year; and Donington in Bloom scooped the Community Group of the Year award.
Volunteers from Donington in Bloom group received the honour for making the village look special, winning it national and regional acclaim. Their work has included developing a community herb garden, successfully lobbying for allotments, fundraising and caring for the village’s plants.
Liz Walker, Donington in Bloom chairman, says that winning the award has encouraged even more community involvement: “More people are using the herb garden and allotments, and schools are also getting involved with their own allotments. Locals and visitors have also become more aware of the group’s work through the award.”
