Cardiology redevelopment at Pilgrim Hospital
Patients undergoing investigations for heart and lung problems at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston will benefit from a major redevelopment costing £95,000.
A new unit for respiratory medicine has been built including a room dedicated to testing of lung function and another for assessing whether patients may require oxygen treatment at home. There is also a new outpatient consultation room and offices for staff.
Lisa Vaughan, Senior Respiratory Clinical Physiologist said the new unit will help to reduce waiting times and provide a more flexible service for patients.
“The extra capacity to perform tests of lung function and oxygen assessments will enable us to see more patients more quickly, helping to cut waiting times. It will also allow us to carry out tests at specific times of the day to suit the needs of patients.”
“We will be able to provide a much faster, more efficient service for patients with suspected lung cancer by performing any tests that are required on the same day as their first consultation with the respiratory physician. This will cut the time between the initial referral from the GP to the start of treatment.”
“Staff are very excited to be involved in this new venture and feel very positive about the future of respiratory medicine at Pilgrim hospital.”
The move of the respiratory department will also enable cardiology to expand with more capacity to carry out investigations into heart conditions. Lisa Gosling, Chief Physiologist said cardiology investigations have increased substantially over the last few years.
She said: “The new facilities will enable us to have dedicated rooms for each of our investigations enabling us to carry out tests on more patients. We will also have areas for administration and student study with access to computers.”
Patient Jenny Dixon from Boston said “I have been treated in both the cardiology and respiratory departments at Pilgrim hospital for the past six years and cannot speak highly enough of the treatment I have received. The staff have always been courteous and informative. This move will see them have much more space than before so ultimately give us the patients an even better service. The staff have always been professional and cheerful but now they will have a much better working environment."
