Health units in breast cancer pledge

Breast units in Lincoln, Grantham and Boston are pledging to improve local breast cancer services.

United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, working alongside Breakthrough Breast Cancer, has asked a number of breast cancer patients at Lincoln County Hospital, Grantham and District Hospital and Pilgrim Hospital in Boston for their opinions about the services they received and any improvements that they think could be made.

Patient’s thoughts and opinions have helped to develop a service pledge. The pledge sets out the standards of care patients can expect, what service improvements people can expect in the future, and how patients can make their voice heard if they think something can be done better.

Anyone diagnosed with breast cancer and receiving treatment in Lincoln, Grantham or Boston will be given a copy of the service pledge booklet – to allow them to understand what their experience within the unit will involve.

There are three launch events taking place in November and December, one at each of our hospitals, to promote the service pledge.

Jo Divver, Breast Care Nurse at Lincoln County Hospital, Doreen Macaskill-Refaat, Breast Care Nurse at Pilgrim Hospital and Nicky Turner, Breast Care Nurse at Grantham and District Hospital, have organised invite-only events in each of their hospitals.

The nurses said: “The pledge has been tried and tested at a number of hospitals around the country. The new pledge booklet that patients will receive provides clear information, outlining what people can expect as well as helping to provide reassurance. We have been really pleased with the amount of feedback we have received from patients, this has really been the basis of the pledge, and has allowed us to put together a credible well-targeted booklet for new patients to read.

“We originally launched the pledge in 2006 – but the recent work has helped us re-evaluate the information booklet and pledge making sure everything is up-to-date.”

The events will take place on the following dates:

-Lincoln County Hospital 18 November 2011 from 3pm to 5pm

-Pilgrim Hospital in Boston 18 November 2011 from 1pm to 3pm

-Grantham and District Hospital 8 December 2011 from 12.30pm to 1.30pm
