Self Care Week, look after yourself
This week is Self Care Week and people in North Lincolnshire are being encouraged to look at some of the many ways they can help themselves stay fit and healthy.
Self-care means keeping fit and well, as well as knowing how to take medicines you’ve been prescribed, how to treat minor ailments and injuries and knowing when to seek professional help. If you already have a long-term health condition, self-care is all about understanding your condition and how to live with it.
“Self-Care Week is all about helping people take better care of themselves and keeping them informed about all the support that’s available both online and in the community to help them look after their own health”, explained Dr Margaret Sanderson, Chair of the North Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group Committee.
This year’s theme is how technology can help boost the way you look after yourself and the campaign is being run in partnership with the Self Care Forum.
Everyone can use self-care to improve their own – and their family’s – health and wellbeing through eating a healthy balanced diet, losing weight, getting more active, stopping smoking and cutting down their alcohol consumption. There is lots of information on the Internet and some useful “apps” you can download for your computer or smartphone if you have one. For a good start, visit the NHS Choices website and take a Life Check the website.
For medical advice that you can trust about illnesses and injuries (including what symptoms mean you definitely need to see a doctor), NHS Direct is always available either online or by calling 0845 4647.
