Keep your vehicle safe this autumn
In the months before Christmas the safer and stronger communities partnership would like to remind motorists of the simple precautions they can take to stay safe and protect their vehicles.
The Vulnerable Vehicle Scheme, as the promotion is being known, offers simple tips that can drastically reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime.
These simple tips are:
1/. Make sure to lock doors and close your windows and sun roof when you leave the car unattended. Remember to never leave animals in an attended vehicle.
2/. Don't leave anything on display.
3/. Remove the car audio device if you can.
4/. Remove SAT Navs and suctions pad, and clean the windscreen to remove the pad marks.
5/. Never leave car documentation in a vehicle.
6/. Never leave a vehicle unattended with the engine running.
7/. Fit an immobiliser or steering lock
8/. Keep yourself and your valuables safe.
Councillor Dave Bolton, the portfolio holder for community safety and neighbourhoods at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "Safer and stronger communities, in an effort to reduce crime further, have launched a scheme and are urging motorists not to leave anything on display in their vehicles.
"A lot of our advice may seem like common sense, but by remembering our very simple tips, you can drastically reduce the risk of being targeted by a criminal."
DCI Gerry Darling said: "Taking simple steps such as removing valuable items or any traces that they were inside your car could be all that is needed to stop you from becoming a victim of crime.
"Opportunist thieves tend to walk around looking into vehicles for things like bags and Sat Nav brackets as clues to what they may find inside. This could be enough for them to break in.
"The Safer and Stronger Communities Vulnerable Vehicle Scheme is a great partnership scheme which simply aims to re-educate drivers to the dangers of leaving valuable items within a vehicle or leaving it insecure while unattended so I would ask drivers to take a good look at this advice as it may prevent you from falling foul at the hands of a crook."
