Clampdown on speeding motorists
The North Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership is targeting 48 hotspots in a bid to clamp down on speeding motorists.
Thirty-nine of the 48 locations have over 1,000 speed offenders every day, with the highest number being in Burnham Road, Epworth with 4,200 offenders.
Between April 2011 and March 2012, the Partnership will use vehicle activated flashing signs and other high visibility speed warning signs - to be in place for three months at every site.
There will also be periods of police enforcement at all sites. The treatment programme is designed to reduce speed and accidents, making the roads safer for all.
This is in addition to the existing 21 safety camera sites in North Lincolnshire, enforced by officers from Safer Roads Humber.
The Partnership also has the ‘20’s plenty’ scheme that is designed to encourage slower speeds in residential areas, and the ‘community speedwatch’ scheme that enables town and parish councils to hire flashing signs if they have a road with a significant speeding problem, but that doesn’t rank high enough for the main treatment programme.
North Lincolnshire Council spokesperson, said: “This treatment programme is an important element of the Road Safety Partnership’s speed management strategy, designed to reduce speed and make local roads safer.
“We know local communities are concerned about the dangers of speeding traffic. Speeding is a criminal offence and by targeting key areas, we will hopefully see a big difference and help reduce the number of accidents on our roads.”
