Young Shots hit the target
Three international athletes inspired forty young people at the first Young Shots Day in Lincolnshire last month.
Gary Taylor, Olympic Skeet Captain, Paul Zaitschenko, international Clay shooter and Sarah Woods, Paralympic Air Rifle shooter, attended the Young Shots Day at Riseholme Campus in September. The event, which gave young people the chance to try ferreting and hawking, clay shooting, fly fishing, target air rifle shooting and archery, provided an opportunity for young people in the county to try sports they have never tried before.
Dave Carter, Facilities Manager at Lincolnshire Active Community Network, organised the day with the British Association of Shooting and Conservation, says, “The Young Shots Day in Lincolnshire was organised to provide opportunities for young people to take part in sport and try disciplines of shooting they have perhaps never tried before. In a rural county such as Lincolnshire, many young children grow up surrounded by these sports, and we wanted to make sure that they had the opportunity to try them in a safe, controlled environment. The event was a huge success and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved.”
As well as representatives from LACN and BASC, sports clubs and volunteers from across the county supported the event including Lincolnshire Salmon and Trout Association, Lincoln Archery Club, University of Lincoln Riseholme Campus staff and Off The Bench.
Helen Wilkie, Firearms Licensing Manager at Lincolnshire Police, says, “It was very encouraging to see so many young adults taking part in the event and enjoying the activities. The disciplines on offer provided an excellent basis for safety and discipline in many areas of country pursuits and I was delighted with the experts who were truly emphasising the safety aspects of the many different activities on offer. The whole day was highly successful and I will continue to support any future events in the county.”
Due to the demand of the event and seventeen young people were added to the waiting list, LACN and BASC will be looking to run another event in spring next year. For more information, visit www.basc.org.uk.
