Big Apple is most desirable destination for Brits

Brits are hoping to shun the trend for ‘staycations’ this year, according to a new survey revealing the top locations UK holidaymakers hope to travel to this year.

New York was voted as the number one destination by UK travellers, followed by Sydney and Amsterdam. The findings come from a survey commissioned by new travel accommodation website, WhereToSleep.co.uk, which launched in April. The website provides an affordable alternative to hotels by linking holidaymakers, business travellers, and backpackers to private hosts who can provide a range of accommodation options from a couch or room, to an entire apartment or house.

The survey showed the following ranking for locations that Brits hope to travel to this year:
New York
Sydney
Amsterdam
Los Angeles /Orlando
Rio de Janeiro
Rome
San Francisco
Vancouver /Barcelona
Antwerp
Tokyo

Radek Dobrolecki, Director of WhereToSleep.co.uk comments:  “Hopping over the pond to New York for either a long or short trip is a favourite of Brits.  But the real surprise is the number of UK travellers looking to head to Sydney. Even the weakness of the pound against the Australian dollar is not stopping Brits longing for the sought-after beaches and sunnier climes that Sydney has to offer.

“However, the tough economic climate has caused UK travellers to look for more affordable ways to travel. Staying in private accommodation provides a real choice away from hotels when travelling abroad or in the UK. It’s also a way of experiencing a ‘home-away-from-home’ - you get a unique travel perspective by getting insights into how local people live, their culture, and of course their invaluable recommendations on what to see and do - giving you a memorable experience.”
