Boris Johnson whisked into intensive care as condition deteriorates

Boris Johnson has been moved to intensive care after his coronavirus symptoms “worsened”, Downing Street has announced.

The prime minister, who tested positive for coronavirus 10 days ago, took himself to St Thomas’ Hospital in London with “persistent symptoms” this weekend, but tweeted that he was in good spirits early on Monday.  .

However, his condition worsened this afternoon (Monday 6th April) at which point his medical team whisked him into intensive care.

Downing Street explain: “Since Sunday evening, the prime minister has been under the care of doctors at St Thomas’ Hospital, in London, after being admitted with persistent symptoms of coronavirus.

“Over the course of this afternoon, the condition of the prime minister has worsened and, on the advice of his medical team, he has been moved to the intensive care unit at the hospital.”

“The prime minister is receiving excellent care, and thanks all NHS staff for their hard work and dedication.”

The prime minister has asked Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab to deputise for him “where necessary”
