Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust announces Art Competition to raise awareness of the impact of litter

Artists of all ages are invited to create a piece of art that illustrates how litter is affecting the environment and wildlife.

Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, Sea-Changers and Bunzl plc have joined forces to run the art competition to raise awareness of how litter is affecting the local environment and wildlife near where people live.

Selected artworks will become part of a display at Gibraltar Point’s Nature Centre from Saturday 28 May and Sunday 5 June 2022 to help celebrate the launch of a new water bottle filling station funded by Sea-Changers Coastal Fountain Fund, sponsored by Bunzl plc.  It will help to reduce plastic waste by enabling visitors to refill their drinks bottles no matter when they visit the reserve.

The competition is open to all ages, any medium can be used whether it’s painting, drawing or sculpture, incorporating recycled elements or wild art using natural materials. Closing date Friday 13 May.

Prizes will be awarded to the winner and runner-up in each category:

  • Under 7 years old
  • 8 to 12 years old
  • 13 to 17 years old
  • Over 18 years old

The prizes have been donated by Bunzl, Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, Liga and Sea Change Wine and include goodie bags for the younger age groups, Wildlife Trust Vouchers, wine and Liga homeware with some environmentally friendly goodies and books for all age groups. A prize giving ceremony will take place on the 31st May.

How to take part

Photograph or scan your artwork and submit it with your name, age or the age category the artwork is submitted into, website/social media handles if applicable and your email address to gibeducation@lincstrust.co.uk with the heading ‘Art Competition 2022’

Submit your entry by 5.30pm on Friday 13 May 2022.

Selected artists will be contacted to make arrangements for inclusion into the Gibraltar Point display. By entering the Art Competition, artists allow Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust to photograph and reproduce their artwork for use in marketing, social media and publicity. We may also use it in other relevant activities where appropriate, that fits with our vision as an organisation. We will always acknowledge the artist.

Vicki Bush, Senior Education & Community Officer at Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve said:”Litter continues to be a major issue for wildlife and the environment from the discarded plastic that’s carelessly dropped to microplastics in the oceans and soils. The competition is an opportunity for children and adults to showcase their creativity and inspire others to think about how their actions impact on the environment.”

James Pitcher Head of Sustainability at Bunzl plc said: “We know that communities in which our businesses operate around the world all want to find ways to protect our environment and to make better use of natural resources.  That’s why we’re delighted to be supporting this initiative and are looking forward to seeing more water bottle refill stations installed around the UK coast.”

Helen Webb, Co-Founder of Sea-Changers said:“As a Marine Conversation Charity we are working tirelessly for the protection of the marine environment. By reducing single use plastics being consumed we can work towards eliminating plastic waste. It’s fantastic that the Coastal Fountain Fund Grant has enabled this new refill point and we hope it is used by many visitors each year.”
