< PreviousBaffled by baked beans Brits have been left baffled after discovering the staple in the English diet and our famous breakfast, baked beans, aren’t actually grown in the country. While the UK does host the world’s biggest baked bean factory, the beans for the delicacy have had to be imported from as far as South America. This, however, is about to change, with the first ever commercial crop of British-grown baked beans now canned following a collaboration with a Lincolnshire farmer. No easy feat, the project developed by scientists at the University of Warwick took 12 years. Farmer Andy Ward said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to be the farmer that’s grown these beans. To see them go through the line and into a tin – soon to be on a piece of toast, is unreal.” When pigs fly How far would you go to keep your pet? Would you be willing to spend $15,000? That is what a couple living in North Carolina have committed to do as they make the move to Lincolnshire. Wilbur, an eight year old pig, was ready to take flight and travel 4,000 miles to his new home in Heckington until his ‘globetrottering’ was grounded by spiralling costs and bureaucracy. Alison and Ruben had planned for their little porker to move with them in November, but a day before their flight were informed Wilbur would have to isolate in the USA for 30 days and undergo numerous tests. Staying with the pig, army veteran Ruben told the BBC the move had become one of his more difficult deployments. The pause in their plans came after almost $14,500 had already been spent to move their pets to the UK, and was down to the pig being considered livestock, unlike being classed as a pet in the US, and therefore facing different rules to their cats and dogs. As a result of the growing costs, the couple set up a GoFundMe, capturing the hearts of animal lovers with nearly $4,800 raised so far (at time of writing). watercooler 70 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.net Have we missed anything? Forcing a temporary closure in both directions, the two animals had actually travelled from Lincolnshire to Suffolk for a Santa’s grotto event, before clopping away from Elveden Estate to take part in some reindeer games on the A11 near Barton Mills. After it became too dark to regroup them, and social media suggestions of looking for them at the North Pole, Blue and Blitzen were eventually reined in the next day with a little Christmas magic — and some coaxing with food and an additional reindeer. © stock.adobe.com/Jürgen Fälchle © stock.adobe.com/ Martin Lee © stock.adobe.com/JamesByyourside then, nowand inthefuture Learn about our free Will Writing Service at ambucopter.org.uk/will Ourfirsthelicopter,1994 LNAACT REG CHARITY 1017501 Experience the Oak Room.
