The patient, Keith Castle, lived for five more years thanks to the procedure, spurring the British Heart Foundation to fund a specialised heart transplant research unit at the same Cambridgeshire hospital. Today, the BHF part-funded Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart and Lung Research Institute is situated right next to Papworth. It’s the largest research development centre of its kind in Europe, opened in 2022 with the goal of identifying ten potential tests or treatments for heart and lung disease by 2027. Without the BHF, one has to wonder when such a life-saving treatment would have come to pass, let alone the grand achievements that have followed the story of Sir Terence and Keith Castle. It was the foundation who funded Donald Ross in the early years after its establishment in 1961, putting itself on the front line of support for groundbreaking surgical advancement. This support led to Ross performing the UK’s first heart transplant in 1968, the world’s tenth attempt to save a life with this surgery. The fact that Ross’s patient Fred West only survived for 45 days proved the need for further research. BHF funding would later support the surgeon in his pioneering improvements in heart valve surgery; but it was the charity’s willingness to back work like his that pushed British history towards its first success in giving a heart transplant patient a new lease of life. In this way, for 60 years the foundation has been at work behind major breakthroughs in heart and circulatory disease treatment. But although backing heart transplants is perhaps the first BHF initiative to spring to mind, it only counts for a fraction of its efforts towards better heart health for the UK. For one, they’re working to make heart attacks easier to diagnose, as a victim might not show the obvious outward symptoms such as chest pain, nausea or shortness of breath, while not all of these are specific to heart attack. This is why an important test looks for a protein called troponin, which is released into the blood from a damaged heart muscle. Research at the University of Edinburgh is being funded to assess a more sensitive troponin test, which would detect much lower levels of the protein, and provide more certainty in diagnosing this devastating Where the heart is We dive into the fascinating backstory of British Heart Foundation, exploring the vital research this organisation spearheads, as well as looking at how you can help support them. 23 Á22 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY DIRECT GASKETS LIMITED Contact us today on 01482 219655 or visit our website www.direct‐gaskets.co.uk For over 30 years we have been market leaders in the manufacture of Gaskets. One of the greatest success stories of last year was the work on a new ‘heart plaster’, which could significantly reduce the need for children to have multiple heart surgeries. The plaster uses mesenchymal cells, which can change into other cell types like muscle and cartilage, to repair holes between the heart’s main pumping chambers, or damage to parts that control blood flow between the heart and lungs. Crucially, this cell patch treatment has the potential to adapt with children as they grow and develop, as it’s adjusting to the needs of a growing heart that makes many repeat surgeries necessary. Other projects in the foundation’s funding pool of medical research are looking into methods to help hearts repair themselves against failure, using the same stem cell research inspiring the children’s heart plaster, and aiming for a future where fewer patients need to undergo transplant surgery at all. BHF carries out its essential work in labs and hospitals, but also in the homes of people living with the day-to-day impact of cardiovascular disease. The organisation was the first to employ heart failure specialist nurses, who now fill an important community role, supporting and caring for patients in the comfort of their homes. Its knowledge from decades of dedication to research and funding has opened the way to a possible future of those at risk being able to protect their health, through positive lifestyle changes and medical prevention. Of course, you can be part of the heart health mission by making cash donations or giving to your local British Heart Foundation store. But if you want to get creative or challenge yourself (or your family, friends and workmates) there’s no idea too big or too silly. Use the excuse to dress yourself up as a favourite character, or any way that’s playful and out of the ordinary. Or, if you’d rather not be the only one making a scene, plan a fancy dress ball and have a sponsored costume competition. If you’re looking for work-friendly ideas, have a dress down day or dare everyone to wear as much red as they possibly can, so you can all have a good chuckle at the results. If you still having trouble deciding, think about where your talents lie. If you’re a beauty fanatic, set up a salon in the comfort of your personal boudoir for the day. If you’re a great cook, go for a bake sale, or a Come Dine With Me challenge for weeks of fundraising fun. There’s always the chance to cut out the sweet stuff for the greater good too, like seeing if you can give up chocolate for a month, or skipping your office’s usual cake or doughnut delivery and donating the money you’ve saved instead. There are plenty of Action Challenges organised by BHF that you can make a memorable event of if you’re able to travel. If not, get the people you care about together for your own sponsored run, bike ride, walk or hike, or any activity you can think of to get the blood pumping. However you show support, know that anything you can imagine or raise is more than enough. The history of the British Heart Foundation shows that simply working together and inspiring each other—just as Donald Ross inspired Sir Terence—can be what makes the biggest difference. © stock.adobe.com/Jevanto Productions26 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FASHION A new month, a new look A new month, a new look As we near the end of winter and prepare for spring, there are plenty of new clothes to bring into your wardrobe.
