< PreviousA quacking race Crowds flocked to watch 1,800 rubber ducks battle down Middle Rasen’s River Rase last month, to kick off the New Year. The annual race has been taking place for over 20 years and raises funds for good causes, with this year’s number of ducks purchased smashing 2023’s record of 1,500. The yellow ducks swam down the water from Parry’s Bridge, Low Church Road, to the Church Street bridge, with the weather pushing the race to complete in just 10 minutes. Medieval merriment Hundreds gathered last month for a spectacular medieval pub game: Haxey Hood. Returning to North Lincolnshire the game — starting with a speech from a ceremonial fool in front of a bonfire — saw competitors from Haxey and Westwoodside barge frantically to gain hold of a leather tube, or hood, thrown to the crowd, to push the hood to their favourite of four local pubs, without throwing or running with it! With the game ending upon the hood being given to the landlord of one of the pubs, Lincolnshire Today congratulates Kings Arms in Haxey for their win! The hood will take pride of place in the winning venue for the year. Though it may seem bizarre, the ancient rugby-style game is one of the oldest local traditions in England. Dating to the 14th century, the game is said to stem from Lady de Mowbray losing her silk riding hood as she rode between Haxey and Westwoodside, and being delighted to see locals chasing it, giving them 13 acres of land on the condition that the event was re-enacted annually. watercooler 70 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.net Have we missed anything? However, every once in a while a few unusual objects are left, especially by the residents of North East Lincolnshire, it turns out! Reflecting on 2023, the Community Recycling Centres at Grimsby and Immingham have shared the oddities they have seen in the past year, such as a 1914 German World War One bombshell made into a coal bucket and a Sinclair C5. Other strange, tipped items included a 1940s American wooden bobsleigh, a replica electric chair, and two brand new zebra print bar stools!
