< PreviousCouncillors vote to safeguard future of RAF Scampton Councillors have unanimously voted in favour of progressing with the RAF Scampton site acquisition and partnering with an investor to deliver a regeneration and redevelopment project worth an estimated £300 million. The decision was made by West Lindsey District Council at its Corporate Policy and Resources Committee. Since the closure of the RAF Scampton base was announced in 2018, the council say they have worked with the Ministry of Defence, local stakeholders and the community to ensure the best possible outcome for the Scampton site and its future positioning within the wider district and county economy. A specific RAF Scampton policy was incorporated into the Central Lincolnshire Local Plan review to ensure the safeguarding and sustainable regeneration of the site post closure. At the heart of this policy is the need to holistically plan for site wide regeneration that delivers benefit to the existing community at RAF Scampton whilst providing an opportunity policy to secure regeneration and economic growth. Underused Grimsby car park spaces to be transformed Community groups are taking a grassroots approach to bring fresh produce to a Grimsby neighbourhood in the drive against rapidly rising food prices. Groups in the town’s East Marsh community are coming together and are set to create a new urban orchard and garden that will feed and educate local people as well as serving as a new communal green space. The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities gave North East Lincolnshire Council an £85,000 grant to create new urban green space or refurbish existing parks. Thanks to the funding, the Council will plant trees at the Albion Street Playground and community groups are set to create the new community garden on part of the underused Garibaldi Street car park. Mary Vickers, Community Food Co-ordinator in North East Lincolnshire, is working with The Salvation Army, St Andrew’s Church, the Rock Foundation, the Fisherman’s Mission and other local community groups to set up the new garden. Planting areas, raised beds, pathways and fencing will be in place by the end of March. Boston College opens new campus in Horncastle Boston College has opened its new campus in Horncastle, which will provide part time daytime and evening courses for adults aged 19+. Built on Horncastle’s Mareham Road, alongside a Public Sector Hub, home to East Lindsey District Council and partner organisations, the campus allows the College to provide local residents with better access to quality learning provision, as well as local workforce development opportunities. Speaking of the opening, Councillor Brian Burbidge, Mayor of Horncastle Town Council said: “This site has had a long involvement in education, and it’s really pleasing to see it continue into the future. I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for both the town and East Lindsey, and I hope the community engage and access the learning options available.” The learning space is based on the ground floor of the new building and includes three classrooms, a digital innovation computed- based classroom and a staff room. The College successfully secured over £1.2 million for the campus from the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership as part of the Government’s Getting Building Fund, with the College investing a further £80,000. latest news © stock.adobe.com/ Jason Wells 06-11.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 09:23 Page 5Flagship Launch in the Lincolnshire Wolds 11th & 12th MARCH 2023 Lusso offer a variety of choices, the traditional Layout of the Prestige Residence and Majestic, the more contemporary open plan living of the Bella Vista and other models from the prestige collection, all situated in large private landscaped gardens. C onveniently positioned within easy reach of Lincoln while being set within the rural tranquillity of the conservation village of Brattleby — an Area of Great Landscape Value — Benaiah is an inviting home constructed in local stone in 1997. Gill and David discovered the property 13 years ago, when A convenient sanctuary A convenient sanctuary 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 09:26 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 13 HOMES seeking a new abode in a village location that was still within the William Farr catchment area, as that was where their two sons attended school at the time. “We were initially drawn to the attractive look of the house and the fact that it has such a lovely, private garden, which has become like a sanctuary for me,” said Gill. “And of course we both come from a rural background, so Brattleby being 10 to 15 minutes’ drive to the top end of Lincoln, but also very much in the countryside, was highly appealing for us.” Taking a tour of Benaiah, one approaches via a private gravel driveway leading to a wooden five bar gate which provides access 14 Á 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 09:26 Page 214 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES to the property. A block paved drive presents parking for several vehicles whilst leading to a double garage and the front of the house, which Gill describes as a home that offers a cosy and comfortable aura, yet is still spacious for enjoying your surroundings. Stepping into the entrance porch through a wood door, one is welcomed by tiled flooring, stained glass feature windows, and wooden French doors opening into the carpeted entrance hall. Moving ahead, immediately to the right is the split level lounge, Gill’s favourite room in the home. She said: “It’s especially wonderful when we have the fire going. At this time of year we spend an awful lot of time in the main living area, though in the summer months we tend to close the room off and move to the sun room to make the most of the weather.” With exposed feature beams, the lounge also holds a feature inglenook fireplace with a Dovre 2000 multi fuel stove on a slate tiled hearth, with wooden mantle above, a charming herringbone brick pattern behind, and leaded glass windows tucked away either side. French doors, meanwhile, open out to the rear garden, and another door connects through to the dining room. The dining room can also be accessed from the entrance hall and flows into the sun room with its exposed feature stone wall, double glazed wooden windows and wooden French doors leading out to the rear garden that flood the area with light. Returning to the home’s entryway, over to the left one can access a WC as well as the garage, while further along is the kitchen, hosting tiled flooring, an exposed feature beam and exposed stone wall, a range of wall and base units with quartz worktop over, tiled splashbacks, an inset stainless steel sink, island breakfast bar with a range of drawers, a Neff microwave, integrated Hotpoint dishwasher, Britannia double oven with gas hob, integrated fridge freezer, Neff extractor, and doors opening to the rear garden and sun room. Travelling upstairs, look out for the delightful arched window on the landing as you explore a trio of bedrooms, including the master suite with its feature exposed beam, dressing room and en- suite. The first floor also offers an office (or further bedroom) and recently 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 09:26 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 15 HOMES refurbished family bathroom. “We are very happy with the results,” Gill said. Fully tiled, the modern bathroom comprises a four piece white suite including a double sink in a vanity unit, corner shower cubicle with mains shower attachment over, low level WC, corner bath, and wall mounted towel rail. Venturing outside of the home, the property presents beautifully mature wrap around landscaped gardens with lots of lawn space, a plethora of planted borders, hedged boundaries, a pergola, decked seating area, alfresco dining patio areas, and a pond. “We have a keen interest in gardening so we do spend a lot of our time out in the garden area,” Gill and David noted. “We’ve 16 Á 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 09:26 Page 416 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES Call or Whatsapp for more information DOMESTIC INSTALLATIONS ARE NOW ZERO VAT RATED developed seating and decking areas so we can live outside when the weather allows and welcome people for barbecues and gatherings.” The garden is also visited by a number of animals. Gill added: “We’ve seen pheasants, hedgehogs, rabbits and the occasional fox, and I love to encourage birds into the garden, feeding them. It is a peaceful haven for us.” Though Gill and David have relished their time at the property, as well as the locale with its wonderful neighbours, they are now looking to sell in order to downsize, with their boys having left home. “It’s been a lovely house,” they said, “and a very nice neighbourhood to live in. We’ve adored the walks around the local lanes, the good choice of pubs in villages either side of where we are — one of which has a great quiz night — as well as the pleasant and short drive into Lincoln. Of course we also have friends and family in the surrounding villages, so for us it’s been like being in the heart of the family, but we’re now ready to downsize.” They added: “We believe it is the type of property that will be quite appealing to a wide variety of house hunters, whether it’s a couple who enjoy gardening like ourselves, or a family. There’s space both internally and externally to accommodate most people’s requirements, and we think it’s a highly attractive dwelling with its stone appearance, yet it’s also modern enough to appeal to people who want a contemporary living space.” Benaiah is on the market with Mount & Minster for £585,000. 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 09:26 Page 5A S LOCAL AS IT GETS! S leep is an important part of our body’s daily cycles, and when our sleep is interrupted we can become sluggish, irritable, and unable to think effectively. For a process that has so much science behind it, and so many contradictory limits on how much or how little we should get (anywhere between 4 – 8 hrs, depending on age and personal health) there is a tendency for many to take a lazy approach to their beds. Beds and mattresses can be expensive after all, and we’re suffering from the cost of living already, meaning those cheap mattresses can look attractive at first glance. The problem with taking a cheap view on your sleeping is how badly it can impact every other aspect of your life. Sleep deprivation does not only mean a lack of sleep, but also refers to interrupted or restless sleep, and can leave you lacking energy. Waking up with poor or limited sleep sets you up for failure later in the day, and is a common cause for why so many tend to crash around 3pm – 6pm. Their bodies simply haven’t gotten the rest necessary to keep going. Often, this impacts other facets of our life, such as our willingness to exercise, our eating habits, our ability to socialise and form meaningful relationships with other people. This can create a negative feedback loop where you feel so bad because of the day that you agonise at night, getting even less sleep and repeating the cycle all over for bed for bed again. The simple fact is that sleep, for most people, equates for over 30% of their day – as much time as is spent at work, and often more time than is spent having free time on a weekday. With so much of the day spent in bed, ensuring said bed is of a high quality should be a key focus, but beyond simple quality, it’s worth finding out what bed is right for you! This often comes down to the mattress, which are typically divided into foam, innerspring, hybrid and gel grid. Memory foam is often the most recognisable and is designed to contour and form to your body shape and size over time. Some find this less or more comfortable but the overall design is to place more support on the body as it sleeps, which makes it perfect for older people, along with those who toss and turn a lot in their sleep. It is especially good at reducing pressure on hips and 18-19.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 09:28 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 19 NATIONAL BED MONTH BRIGG BEDS and so to bed... 01652 651828 Princess Street | Brigg | DN20 8HG www.briggbeds.co.uk are, again, somewhat more expensive than their other options due to the added material. With all the different kinds of mattresses available it can seem hard to find the right option – which is why it’s so important to go out and shop around. You should treat a good mattress like a good pair of shoes, and seek to try it out. Don’t just lay down and take a first impression but let your body rest for a minute or two to get a more accurate appreciation for the comfort, as memory foam or springs will need a little time to absorb the shock of your laying down and even out. You also shouldn’t be afraid to ask people in store either, as they ought to be able to suggest the best beds for your sleeping style, your preferred positions, and your needs. © stock.adobe.com/ New Africa © stock.adobe.com/ Viacheslav Yakobchuk shoulders, making it perfect for those with issues there. Innersprings are some of the most commonly used mattresses and have been around for a long time. These are the springs inside the mattress option, usually making for a firmer mattress. They are very durable due to the metal springs, and often significantly cheaper, but can feel too firm for some people. That firmness is useful for those with bad backs however, who might appreciate the extra support and the fact the mattress doesn’t give way beneath their spines. Hybrid mattresses are, as the name suggests, a combination of the above two options. They combine memory foam with springs, usually with the memory foam above the springs. They’re obviously good for people with any of the above problems, but this advance in technology, and the more demanding process in making them, naturally means they’re a little more expensive than other options. Gel grids are relatively uncommon as far as mattresses go, which might have a lot to do with how Lincolnshire is not that warm a county. Gel grid mattresses strike a middle point between firmness and comfort and are great for those with spinal problems as a result, but their biggest selling point is temperature regulation – with gel grid mattresses being very slow to heat up, and cooling in hot summer weather. With how scorching hot the last few summers have been here in the UK they might start becoming more popular, and we could see more of them appearing.
