< Previous© stock.adobe.com/ Oleg Gekman W ith the Spring season approaching, we often associate this time with fresh, youthful, effortless beauty. Ethereal beauty is a look that is often associated with a dreamy, otherworldly quality. It is perfect for spring, as it relies on a dewy look (reminiscent of morning dew on flowers) but can be punctuated with pastel colours such as yellows, greens, and purples, to remind us of the vibrance of new life. The beauty of the ethereal look is that you can truly make it yours and adapt it to be as bold or as natural as you like. Experimentation, particularly with colour, is welcomed. If you’re searching for an easy way into this effervescent style, look no further. One of the most important steps in achieving an ethereal beauty look is to focus on your skincare routine. Ethereal beauty is signified by a glow that shines from within and is best achieved through a consistent and nourishing skincare routine. This includes cleansing, toning, and moisturizing your skin every day. It’s important to choose products that are gentle (without alcohols or parabens), as these can cause irritation and damage to your skin. Try searching for moisturisers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, and glycerine, as these encourage water retention in the skin, creating that dewy appearance. Once you have established a basic skincare routine, you could incorporate a Vitamin C serum in your daily routine. This Ethereal beauty in the springtime The coming of a new season means a new look, and we delve into how to achieve an ethereal glow this March. HAIR & BEAUTY 40-41.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 10:21 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 41 HAIR & BEAUTY stimulates collagen production, which smooths fine lines and wrinkles, and helps to give a more plumped look. A good skincare routine will give you an effortlessly glassy appearance, creating an otherworldly shine. Achieving a high shine finish with skincare may be enough for you. For those who want more however, the next place to turn is your foundation. Whilst ethereal does not have to mean perfect, achieving a smooth base with a lightly applied foundation will help any bolder colours applied afterwards to stand out. When it comes to applying makeup for an ethereal beauty look, less is more. Choose a sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer that matches your skin tone. Avoid a matte foundation that will cover up your natural skin texture and luminosity. Instead, choose a product that will enhance your skin’s natural beauty and provide a subtle, dewy finish. Once applied, gently pat your face with a cotton pad to remove any excess foundation. This will allow natural features like freckles to show through, but your skin will still look even. Ethereal beauty is all about soft, dreamy colours that achieve a natural, yet exquisitely unusual appearance. Use soft pastel colours on your eyes, cheeks, and lips to achieve this effect. For your eyes, choose a pastel lavender, green or pale blue eyeshadow, and apply it lightly to your eyelids. Blend this gently upwards towards your eyebrows to give a softer look. Then, use a brown or grey pencil eyeliner to create a subtle definition around your eyes. This should not be heavy, and only applied on the outer corner of the eyes. Finish with a coat of black mascara to make your eyes pop. For your cheeks, choose a soft pink or peach blush, and apply it lightly to the apples of your cheeks. Blend it well with a brush or your fingers for a natural, flushed look. For your lips, use a soft pink or peach lip gloss to add a subtle sheen. If you want a punchier look, try applying a pink, red or coral lipstick on your cheeks and blending with your fingers. This gives more shine than a powder blush and will match perfectly to your lips. Highlighter is an essential step in achieving an ethereal beauty look. Choose a highlighter (or shimmery eyeshadow) that is a shade lighter than your skin tone and apply it to the high points of your face, such as your cheekbones, brow bone, and the bridge of your nose. This will give your skin a natural, luminous glow that looks like you have emerged from a mystical lake. For those set on a more magical look, use chromatic eyeshadows and coloured highlighters (iridescent lavenders and pinks work perfectly) to set a rainbow shining across your face. To set your ethereal beauty look, finish with a light mist of setting spray or facial mist. This will help to keep your makeup in place and give your skin a final, subtle glow. Your eyebrows are an important part of your ethereal beauty look. Use a brow pencil or powder to fill in any sparse areas, and then brush them upward for a natural, feathery look. Set with a brow gel or clear mascara to keep them in place all day. Avoid using a heavy hand or harsh lines, as this can detract from the soft, dreamy quality of the look. For your hair, keep it natural and soft. Opt for soft, loose waves or a messy bun. Avoid hairspray, instead using a light texturizing spray to give you some volume and texture, and then brush it out for a natural, flowing look. Small braids created to frame the face also work. You can finish these off with colourful hair elastics, or delicate butterfly clips for extra whimsy. © stock.adobe.com/ Alena 40-41.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 10:21 Page 242 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HEALTH & FITNESS B reathing is an everyday part of life and everyone knows how to do it. We’d die if we didn’t. As a result, there is a real tendency to laugh at or dismiss specialist advice on how to breathe as unnecessary. However, there are many practices, exercises and even martial arts that stress the importance of learning how to breathe properly – and the NHS even lists several breathing exercises that can help reduce stress and anxiety. Simply put, breathing is simple – but breathing well is not. There are a whole range of exercises and techniques that change the way we breathe, fundamentally altering how we take in and retain oxygen. The goal of these is not to change how you breathe. The way your lungs draw oxygen is efficient for survival. Many breathing exercises would harm if you tried to use them 24-7, but then doing push-ups 24-7 would also kill you. The goal is to use breathing exercises – like physical exercise – in moderation. Breathing plays a big part in Yoga for instance, which is one of the most mainstreams forms of exercise and stretching in today’s world – practiced by millions globally. The way in which the back is stretched and arched changes the way we breathe and can mean more air entering and exiting our lungs. In recent times more specialised breathing exercises have been designed that can be undertaken anywhere. Many of these allow for the The benefits of breathing well There’s a tendency to look at something we all do as a part of staying alive and dismiss it as irrelevant, but numerous exercise regimes – and therapeutic practices – stress the importance of proper breathing, and its myriad health benefits. The benefits of breathing well 42-43.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 09:51 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 43 HEALTH & FITNESS © stock.adobe.com/ JodieWang person performing them to experience the benefits of reduced stress and increased physical and emotional health, without having to bring out mats and exercise equipment. This makes them perfect for performing at work, at home, or anywhere that one can take a few minutes out their busy day to focus on their breathing. The NHS, for instance, recommends that their breathing exercises be done for five minutes, and it can be done laying down or standing up. The goal is to draw in breath deep down so that it feels as though it’s going far into your belly, and then to exhale slowly over as many as five seconds, and then repeat. Those who still remember their days in science class may recognise these different states of breathing as something taught in biology. They are known as Eupnea – which is our normal breathing rate. Hypernea is the gasping and deep breaths you know (and likely hate) that come after exercise, and when the body is desperately trying to draw in more oxygen. Then there is diaphragmatic, which is where you engage your diaphragm to help you draw in deeper breaths of air. Many breathing exercises focus on the latter, which make them more relaxing and less gasping. The NHS advises people wishing to try these to sit back in a chair with their hands on the armrests, placing your feet flat on the floor roughly hip-width apart. From there, try breathing in through your nose and keep drawing until you feel can feel it deep down in your belly (don’t breathe in so much that you feel uncomfortable). If you can, count slowly to five before releasing the air through your mouth, again counting to five if possible. Early on, five whole seconds may feel too difficult because your lungs are unused to the exercise. Hold for three instead, but try to hold for the same amount of time drawing in as releasing. You should then repeat the exercise for up to five minutes. It’s a simple exercise, but science has shown benefits, and such techniques have been used since ancient times. Indeed, breathing exercises have indeed been around for thousands of years, and were mainstay staples of Tai Chi and Buddhism, used ever since in Buddhist temples where people are known to have incredibly robust immune systems. Consciously controlling your breathing is by no means a new thing, nor is it a fad, but a method that has been passed down through ancient history through to today, carried alongside some of the most successful techniques and exercise routines in the world like Yoga. With that kind of history, it might be worth paying a little more attention to how we breathe. 42-43.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 09:51 Page 244 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FOOD & DINING A new season means a welcome chance to get in the kitchen and not be held back by how cold it is. The Red Lion is well-known in the local area, and it’s won numerous dining awards from us over the years as well. In keeping with the overall theme of the pub, the Red Lion’s menu is as exciting as it is varied. There are options for everyone, from vegetarian to vegan, and no shortage of twists that the Red Lion call their own. My partner and I were welcomed by friendly staff who saw us to our seats. It was a busy evening, which is always a good sign, and I opted to start with the deep fried carbonara with sweet tomato jam, basil pesto and a balsamic glaze. It’s a fun twist on an old classic that speaks to the Red Lion’s passion for cooking, and it tasted divine. Not too heavy, as a starter shouldn’t be, but light and tempting with a soft basil pesto that complimented rather than overwhelmed. My partner chose the more traditional soup of the day, which was cherry vine tomato lightly seasoned but with a zingy tomato flavour. The sourdough, especially, is something to write about because it was simply wonderful. For the main course I wanted to continue pushing the Red Lion’s team and ordered an aromatic asian spiced chicken breast with a spicy Thai yellow curry and sticky jasmine rice. Curry can be a tricky thing to get right, especially when working on an Asian dish, but I was blown away by the creamy, coconutty and spicy dish. I was especially impressed with the sticky rice, which can be so very hit and miss outside of dedicated Asian restaurants. It was easily one of the most flavoursome curries I’ve had in recent months, and the chicken was incredibly tender. Being more of a traditionalist, my partner chose to enjoy a pan fried fillet steak with garlic flat-roasted mushrooms, fondant potatoes and truffle-infused butter. Steak is, of course, a staple of any good pub in our county – or even the whole country – and being able to get it just right is an absolute necessity. Here, the demi-glace sauce really adds an extra level of meatiness to the steak, transforming it from traditional fare into something luxuriant. The vine tomatoes contributed just the right amount of acidity, while the potatoes were melt-in- the-mouth soft. No less care is taken with dessert at the Red Lion, where I decided to complete my flavourful meal with a sweet lemon and lime posset. Why slow down for dessert? My posset was zesty and bold, refreshing and light and, in my opinion, just the right way to finish off a strong and spicy curry. My partner chose to go with cheese and biscuits, and couldn’t stop talking about how good the Stilton was in particular. Overall, it’s hard to knock the Red Lion on anything – the food is delicious, the service is excellent, and the pub itself is so warm and friendly that it feels like the kind of place you’d love to work in, let alone dine at. It’s impossible not to sense the passion the owners have for the place, from the décor to the menu and meals. Truly, it’s an experience that needs to be experienced to be believed. The Red Lion can be found on the High St, Caythorpe, Grantham NG32 3DN. For more information, be it on the menu or how to book a table, you can call on 01400 272 632 or visit and book online at www.redlioncaythorpe.com Nestled in the picturesque village of Caythorpe, the Red Lion has long been a favourite of ours. Following their recent refurb, we took the opportunity to visit and sample its fine food. 44-49.qxp_Layout 1 21/02/2023 09:53 Page 6Next >
