An immaculate LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 13 HOMES S tanding on Lincoln’s Wordsworth Street, a stone’s throw from the magnificent Cathedral and Castle, is a grand Grade II Listed building steeped in history. Bailgate Court was built in 1776 as Lincoln County Hospital, but in the 1870s became a theological college where Chad Varah, who founded the Samaritans, trained. Since 1995 it has been part of Lincoln University and in 2018/19 was converted, extended and sensitively restored into private, luxury apartments. Nicki and 14 Á14 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES Graham have lived in one such apartment for five years — since the completion of the building’s transformation. The couple were enamoured by the concept of the apartment before planning permission was even gained. Nicki shared: “When we came to the building to meet the developers, we knew we loved it as soon as we stood on the front steps and took in the view across Lincoln; we thought ‘we’d like to live here’. The room that is now our living room was their meeting room at the time, where they had all of their plans and chatted about the work and, admiring its big windows and views of the Cathedral, we thought ‘if we can buy the apartment that this room is going to be in we’re going to buy it’, so we did!” In committing to the abode early, Nicki and Graham were able to have input into the finishes of the flat, from colours used to the kitchen, the fittings in the shower rooms, lighting, flooring, and were even able to choose their preferred silver light switches. “It was quite exciting to be there from the start and see it being developed into the incredible apartments that are here today, with each so different to one another,” Nicki added. Retaining many original features, the ground floor apartment is accessed via an impressive entrance communal hall, from which one steps into the flat’s own entry hallway. With underfloor heating and Sonos speakers throughout, straight ahead is a large open plan kitchen and living room, the owners’ favourite spot in their home. “We love the living space. It’s so spacious and light and has been the location for some great parties. Whenever anyone comes in this room LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 15 HOMES who hasn’t been before they simply say ‘wow’.” A fashionable, herringbone style, pale wood flooring runs through the living, dining and kitchen area, which provides a delightful mix of the historic and new. The living room is part of the old building, hosting original windows and original panelling to the walls and ceiling, which reaches to four meters high, while the rest of the apartment is part of a new extension. The modern kitchen, chosen by Nicki and Graham themselves during the conversion, offers a wonderful pop of colour and mix of textures 16 Á16 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES with its dark wood, blue, and white cabinets and countertops. On top of a built in fridge freezer, dishwasher, double oven, induction hob, and large island, the couple noted that “one of the amazing things” about the kitchen is the abundance of storage space. Continuing through the apartment, there is a handy utility room, two bedrooms with built in wardrobes, as well as an en-suite to the main bedroom and an additional shower room, both with relaxing walk-in showers and Ted Baker tiles. Extensive communal grounds wait to be explored too. Nicki shared: “The garden offers views across Lincoln and is such a peaceful space, which is surprising in the middle of the city! We go out there a lot in the Summer, and the grassed area is a pleasant spot to meet with neighbours and have drinks in the evening. It’s attractive as well, with some large, old trees, including apple trees, and is great on New Year’s Eve at midnight when you can see all the fireworks across the city.” Despite adoring the apartment, Nicki and Graham are now moving. “It’s been an impressive but also really calm and comfortable home,” they said. “But we are relocating to Manchester to be closer to family.” The apartment is on the market with Mount & Minster with a guide price of £650,000 to £675,000. 18 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRE Born in 1952, Allan Morgan began his career in illustration and publishing before later in life discovering a passion for artwork centred around realist landscapes.
