But in lieu of nationwide shutdowns of bars, restaurants, theatres, gyms, cinemas, leisure centres and some shops, a better slogan might be we’re all in this together. Time and again I’ve been blown away by the kindness and generosity of the people here in Lincolnshire. Recently I’ve seen first-hand and heard from friends, colleagues and readers about how people are supporting one another through this crisis, unprecedented in our lifetimes. It could be something as simple as getting the shopping for an elderly neighbour or family member. Times of crisis bring out the best in people and I’ve never been prouder to be a part of this county. While we won’t pretend to know better than government and health bodies, what we do know is that as more and more people self-isolate, keep their distance and work from home, they’ll need something to help pass the time. Enter our April issue. Where possible, we’ve kept our staples intact, to help provide a sense of dependable normality in these uncertain times. But, of course, there’s no denying that we are living in an ongoing pandemic and the April issue – and future issues – will reflect that. We hope readers will listen to official advice and stay safe. The colourful horse brooch was unearthed in a field near Leasingham by metal detector enthusiast Jason Price from Grantham, and has, according to a local expert, rewritten the understandings around Roman brooches. “This brooch is an exciting and rare discovery,” said Dr Lisa Brundle, the Finds Liaison Officer at Lincolnshire County Council. “This type of Roman horse brooch is incredibly rare in Britain – and is the second only to have been found in the UK. The only other one is in the British Museum and is decorated differently – with spots of enamel only. The Leasingham horse, however, is in a league of its own with its pin situated below the legs and the realistic depiction of a saddle.” The brooch will be on display at the Collection Museum in Lincoln later this year. West Lindsey launches community lottery A community lottery is being launched by West Lindsey District Council to help support good causes around the district. West Lindsey lottery is a weekly online lottery and tickets cost £1. A top prize of up to £25,000 can be won. However, the real winners are the good causes as 50p from every ticket goes directly to a good cause in West Lindsey. Gatherwell will be administering the lottery on behalf of the Council. Cllr Owen Bierley, Chairman of the Prosperous Communities Committee, welcomed the West Lindsey Lottery and said that good causes can join the lottery at any time. He said: “Community groups often do not have the means to access a range of funding opportunities, the lottery will give them the means to publicise themselves better, reach a wider audience and hopefully gain more support.” The first draw will be on the 30 May with tickets being available to purchase from the 14 April. © Shutterstock/Gabriel Petrescu Immingham’s new permanent heritage trail, commemorating its link to the Mayflower Pilgrims, has formally opened to the public. 2020 marks the 400-year anniversary of the Mayflower’s journey to the new world presenting Immingham with a unique opportunity to maximise its visitor offer and the town has a host of events and activities for both visitors and its residents during the year. The new heritage trail takes visitors on a walk from the museum to the church, the Pilgrim Fathers Monument and Mill Lane, bringing to life local history along the way with permanent information boards and map. The completion of the trail marks the final phase of the Pilgrims in Immingham project funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) through a LEADER project designed to support cultural and heritage activity in rural areas. The project was also part-funded by Associated British Ports. 06-08.qxp_Layout 1 25/03/2020 13:24 Page 1A free, fun family event that celebrates all things cycling is returning to Lincoln this summer for its second year. Organised by Access Lincoln, North Kesteven District Council and Giant and run in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council and Lincoln Big, Cycle Fest aims to provide residents, commuters and visitors with more travel choices, helping them to save time and money, lead healthier lifestyles and protect our environment. At last year’s inaugural event, over 800 people enjoyed cycling activities, including bike trails, led-rides, simulators, taster sessions and even a treasure hunt. This year, the event coincides with The Giant Lincoln Sportive at Doddington Hall. The sportive has four set distances for riders to choose from – between 33 and 100 miles – and each take in some beautiful parts of Lincoln and the surrounding area. Cycle Fest returns to Doddington Hall on Sunday 21 June. As of writing, the event is still scheduled to take place. In addition, the Humber LEP has awarded £1.3 million, provided through the government’s local growth fund program. The additional investment brings the total commitment of public and private funding to over £90 million to deliver ambitious targets of over 8,000 new jobs and nearly 10,000 new homes in Grimsby through the UK’s first Town Deal. On top of this, Grimsby can still bid for up to £25 million as part of the £3.6 billion Towns Fund. On his tour of Grimsby, Mr Jenrick learned how the money will fund work to boost footfall in Grimsby Town Centre by providing a replacement pedestrian footbridge over the River Freshney and improve the attractiveness of the strategic Garth Lane site to potential investors. Members of North East Lincolnshire Council’s (NELC) planning committee have approved proposals for the ‘White Palm’ public art in Cleethorpes. The proposed structure was first revealed last summer, along with three other elements of public art destined for the North Prom. Moved from its original proposed location to protect wildlife, planning has now been granted for the structure to be erected at the end of Wonderland building. In conjunction with wider works in the resort, the North Prom area was awarded a grant from the Coastal Communities Fund, secured by CoastNEL and NELC, to improve the resort’s arts and culture offering. Designed by Wolfgang Weileder, the structure will be a striking 72 ft tall white artificial palm tree and black paving that reflects its shadow at noon. The shadow underneath would be partly made from recycled, non-organic material collected from Cleethorpes’ beaches, and at night, it would be illuminated by spotlights. The White Palm is due to be constructed and installed later this year. latest news New outdoor festival set for the Wolds in 2021 The Lincolnshire Wolds Outdoor Festival is set to launch in 2021 to encourage people to take part in a variety of leisure activities whilst exploring the Lincolnshire Wolds. It will feature an array of outdoor activities and is the spiritual successor to the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival (LWWF). The LWWF celebrated its 15th anniversary last year and, whilst it is taking a break for 2020 as the Outdoor Festival is developed, walking will remain an important part of the Outdoor Festival when it launches next year. The Festival is being developed collaboratively by a steering group of organisations, all of whom were involved in running the LWWF, including: The Ramblers, Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service, British Mountaineering Council, Heritage Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire County Council and East and West Lindsey District Councils. The Outdoor Festival team will be working with local businesses, groups and activity providers to create an event that is active, diverse and showcases the Wolds.
