But now we’re seeing a growing trend for watercolours – just not in the way you’re thinking. Imagine your eyelids as an artist’s palette and use a variety of colours for a subtle yet striking look. It’s part of the wider contrasting colours trend we’ve been seeing around eyes, with mismatched colours top and bottom. Speaking of above and under the eye, we’re seeing a strong preference for falsies. Okay, so falsies are a girl’s best friend, but we’re not just talking on top, but on the bottom as well. It’s a great cheat if you’re in a hurry – you can just skip the liner and stick your falsies on for instant impact. Beyond falsies, there’s still a fondness for eye embellishment on the catwalk. Glitter is here to stay and continues to be the go-to product to spruce up eye make-up, but there’s also a growing use of stickers, diamonds and jewels. Here you can go in for as much or as little as you want. A diamond at the corner of each eye can really set your look off, while others might want to put them all along the edge. Your call. Free-floating eyeliner is still proving popular where intricate designs are drawn all around the eye rather than directly beneath or above it. It looks great on models and better on the gram, but not exactly one for every day. Maybe save it for parties. Where eyeshadow’s concerned, it’s all about pastel blues this spring with maybe some purple underliner if you’re feeling flirty. For eyebrows, you can go one of two ways. At one end of the spectrum it’s all about looking loud and proud, aligning with the gender neutral beauty trend. In contrast, there’s a growing popularity around bleached brows which have the opposite effect, making you look other-worldly. Lately, there’s a bit of a switcheroo with lips and eyes with the pastel shades we’ve been seeing on lips favouring more neon shades lately. We’re talking big, bright and bold colours that really make an impact. Outside of that, there’s a move towards darker shades, with deep reds and even blacks becoming more commonplace. These are statement shades with a touch of sophistication. For maximum impact, pair with a nude complexion or mix and match with blue eyeshadow. Whatever your colour, glossy or matte, the choice is up to you. For skin, the nude and natural look shows no signs of slowing down and, honestly, we’re relieved. It’s all about using minimal product for maximum impact such as a thin layer of foundation with a few carefully used drops of well blended concealer. That’s got to be better than wearing a thick mask of foundation, right? You’ll look and feel better and your skin will thank you for it. To really get the most out of the nude look, use highlighter along the bridge of your nose. It’ll add that final glowy touch and leave you looking bright and natural. Where blusher is concerned, we’ve seen pink almost entirely overtake the peach tones so beloved in previous seasons. Looking at nails and, thankfully, go big or go home looks are moving aside in favour of more elegant styles. We love a French manicure as much as the next person, it’s tried, tested and gorgeous, but the Parisian take is just so much better. Here the white tips are traded for colour polish. Need we say more? Just expect to see this look everywhere this season in every colour you can imagine. Okay, so that’s skin and make-up taken care of, but what about hair? There are a few major styles that are having a moment right now. For a safe bet, stick with bangs and baby bangs. They’re adorning every style you can think of – they’re even reinventing the mullet. Seventies bangs, especially, are coming back in a big way thanks to some of your favourite celebs. If that’s too far back for your liking, turn to the nineties instead. We’re seeing a resurgence in ‘the Rachel’, all those wonderfully lustrous looks worn by Jennifer Aniston on Friends. There’s a reason she’s still such a style icon. The lob is a beloved style, no doubt about it, but it’s growing up and the 2020 take on the long bob is all about keeping it asymmetrical. Start with a lob and cut it shorter in the back and longer in the front and you’re basically there. It can be as edgy or elegant as you want. Elsewhere there’s been a return of shaggy styles and, for longer looks, it’s all about those brow-skimming French fringes. Hair accessories are still just as popular as they’ve been in previous seasons, maybe more so, the bigger the better. So arm yourself with plenty of clips, grips, barrettes, bows and headbands and you won’t go far wrong. When it comes to colour, it’s all about personal tones. Stylists are turning away from standard balayage for something more subtle with multi-tonal natural effects. It’s been a catwalk darling for years and now stylists are bringing it to the masses. 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 25/03/2020 14:30 Page 2Next >
