The owners have lived at the property for 42 years, completely renovating it and painstakingly restoring the run down interior during that time. They noted: “When we bought the home, the focus had been the gardens, with the inside left in a bit of a state, and of course in the 1950s people tended to rip out original Lovingly restored, Lincolnshire Today’s property of the month for April is a stunning Georgian, stone family home with a wealth of original features and expansive gardens, perfect for whether you want to play football, croquet, or to relax in peace and privacy. S elf-taught Grace Ellen was inspired by the great diversity seen in British nature and wildlife, and each of her paintings are a snapshot of her experience at a location on the given day. At first glance, her paintings are almost photorealistic, but a closer look can reveal painterly strokes and textures that can only be created through the use of different texture mediums like sprays and inks, alongside traditional paints. Grace grew up in a family of photographers, which played a major part in her interest. They always encouraged Grace to capture the world around her, and that is something she has carried into her artistic career. A garden spring clean will help keep your garden healthy and ready for the warm summer months, and one thing you can do is prune your forsythias and Chaenomeles. These shrubs have amazing colour in the spring and pruning them will ensure they flower next year too. The time to prune them is when the flowers are over and cut back the flowered shoots to two or three buds from the base. On more established shrubs cut out about a third of the older growth to the base of the plant. This will encourage new shoots to grow from the base. One indicator to the shifting of the seasons can be found in the garden pond. The frogs and toads will start to spawn this month. Hopefully all the major pond maintenance was carried out last autumn to minimise any harm to the wildlife. However, if any clearance is needed, then please remember to leave any debris out by the edge of the pond for at least a day or two so any beasties can crawl back instead of ending up on the compost heap! At this time of year, the fish will become more active, so now is a good time to check that pond pumps and filters are all working correctly. When the water warms up the fish will feed more, and the filtration systems will be working harder than they have done in the past few months. Hanging baskets are also something that you can be doing now. When choosing plants to fill the basket bear in mind the colours of the flowers and their form. You can have some trailing, such as lobelia, campanula, begonias or carnations. And for height you could use geraniums, fuchsias and petunias to name just a few. You also want to consider using Spring is a magical time of year, and Ed Fuller from Fullers Landscaping explains there is always something to do! Spring cleaning Spring cleaning 18-19.qxp_Layout 1 20/03/2023 11:04 Page 1* Keep weeds under control. * Mow your lawn (lowering the blades gradually). * Dig in a layer of compost into your beds. * Deadhead daffodils but leave the foliage intact allowing it to die back naturally, so they will bloom again next year. * Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds. * Feed hungry shrubs and roses. * Keep bird baths and bird feeders topped up to encourage birds to your garden. * Plant out perennials in groups of three, five or seven. * Protect fruit blossom from late frosts. * Divide bamboos and waterlilies. Spring is the time when your lawn is growing most actively. To keep your lawn healthy there are a few things you can be doing. When you mow the grass for the first time make sure the mowing height is set high. Do not cut more than one-third of the grass blades at a time, otherwise the grass will become stressed. As the blades grow bigger you can mow it at a suitable frequency and lower the settings. If you have empty or scarce patches in your lawn, then over-seeding in spring can help. Break up and rake the surface before sowing the grass seeds at half the recommended rate. Rake again to move the seeds below the surface. Sprinkle water over the area frequently and the seeds will germinate in a few days. Soon the empty patches will be blanketed by fresh grass.
