When the LNAA responds to a critical case and take a patient to a hospital, there are often only minutes as the patient is handed over to give a thorough picture to medical staff of the patient’s condition. Where many people running high on adrenaline and worry would rush and babble out inconsequential information, LNAA crew need to concisely and accurately detail everything they know about the patient, which takes a steady mind and nerves of steel. The LNAA coming together with the QMC Hospital allowed teams from both sides to get to know the work of the other, strengthening understanding between the two teams and improving the flow of communication between them. All of this is to ensure the LNAA teams can give the best possible care they can to any of their patients. This commitment to patient care has led the LNAA to invest further in its own equipment as well. Running the 24-hour, 365-day service has been aided in no small part by the inauguration of a new, top-of-the-range helicopter for its crews. The charity effort’s current air ambulance is an AgustaWestland169, a far cry from the charity’s first ambucopter, an ex-police Bolkow aircraft. Weighing in at 4800 kilograms and measuring just under 15 metres longs, it stands at the cutting edge of medical aviation and technology. Besides its ability to bypass road congestion to reach its destination, its top recorded speed of 216 miles per hour allows it to reach any given point across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire – an area covering 3,500 square miles – in less than 20 minutes. All of that with fewer pit-stops to refuel, as it can fly for 2.5 hours on a full tank. If it so desired, it could fly for 375 miles (as far as Germany) in one uninterrupted flight. With the introduction of this new vehicle, the Air Ambulance can reach almost anybody who might need it. However, there are still situations where this one helicopter may be unable to fly, such as during maintenance which requires it be grounded for more than a day. But some emergencies are unable to be attended by helicopter, and that’s where the Critical Care Car comes in. In poor weather conditions or in densely packed urban areas like the city of Nottingham, the car transports identical life-saving equipment to the gear stored in the helicopter, with blue lights and sirens to negotiate through traffic just the same as NHS emergency vehicles. The Nottingham Critical Care Car celebrated its third birthday in September 2022 and since its launch in 2019, has been used to respond to 868 missions. It operates Thursday to Sunday from 2pm to 2am and was called to 418 incidents in 2022, an increase of 29% on 2021. The car is vital to providing enhanced pre- hospital care to patients in Nottingham and its surrounding villages. The crew attended incidents including road traffic incidents, medical emergencies, assaults and self-harm. One of the biggest challenges the LNAA faces, however, is keeping all of this running. Increased operational hours and new emergency vehicles for the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance, on top of the cost and hard work every mission takes, are achieved first and foremost by public donations. Without the generosity of its supporters, the service would never have been able to take flight. It doesn’t receive any direct government funding, as it isn’t part of the NHS. And yet, in one streamlined service with a tight-knit crew, it carries the equipment and professionals of an A&E unit directly to patients in dire need of life-saving medical treatment. Every mission requires an average of £4,000 in funding. And every year, funding the upkeep of the helicopter, its crew, fuel and medical supplies, and more besides, totals up to costs of £8 million. This funding is now also needed to continue efforts towards a permanent 24- hour operation schedule. There’s a number of ways you can support this vital organisation – from shopping in one of its charity shops, donating your time as a volunteer, joining the weekly lottery for just £1 a week. You could also gift a donation in your will, or just make a one- off donation via the website www.ambucopter.org.uk. If you want to get involved in a bigger way however, then there are many ways to raise money for the air ambulance. You can do anything from charity walks to events, host parties or complete challenges for donations. If you’re struggling for ideas or don’t know where to start then the LNAA’s website has a dedicated section not only with ideas, but resources that tell you how to set an event up, where to send the money, and more. It also gives plenty of good examples of what others have done in the past, and can be found online at www.ambucopter.org.uk/fundraise-for-us/ The Air Ambulance in numbers £8 million – The current cost to keep the service operational each year. 26,716 – The number of missions the air ambulance has flown in between its founding in 1994 and 2022. £4,000 – The average cost of each mission. 2,500,000 – The number of people the air ambulance provides medical support to across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. 20 – The number of minutes it takes for the air ambulance to reach the furthest point in its catchment radius. 4 – The average number of callouts every day. 48-53.qxp_Layout 1 20/03/2023 12:08 Page 654 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FAMILY MATTERS D espite the benefits inherent in caring for elderly family members at home, maintaining this closeness of loved ones, along with a warm personal touch, also provides emotional support and dignity right through to the end of life. It’s these areas of inner wellbeing, both for the elderly and their families, that prove the worth of home care and why it’s a worthwhile, if challenging, responsibility to take on. If you are considering stepping up to care for a loved one, or otherwise comparing the routes available, it’s always a compassionate step to consider how you can keep being there for someone close to you who needs that extra level of support. Three of the most important reasons to bear this in mind are the independence, respect and self- respect of the elderly person. As people age, they can often experience a loss of freedom in their usual routines due to physical and cognitive decline. By providing care and support at home, caregivers can give any assistance that might be needed, while still giving elders their own time and space, and promoting their agency and autonomy within comfortable surroundings. Think about the emotional stability and grounding you find in making decisions about your own life and routines, and you’ll begin to understand the negative impact on a loved one whose sense of personal control may be fading. Caring for the elderly at home allows them to maintain this autonomy and command over their lives, which is so easy for those of us still in our prime to take for granted. Regular home visits by people they know and trust allow them to feel reassured in the support you’re providing them, as well as their liberty to make decisions about their own schedules and activities when you’re away. This can help reduce feelings of helplessness or dependence, which can each be detrimental to emotional health in their own complex ways. With tight schedules and high attention demands on care home or visiting staff, there may not be enough time in a day to make sure every patient or resident is coping well, whether with pre-existing illness or disability, age- related health decline, or simply new surroundings and strange faces. The ability to stay in a familiar environment, such as their own home or a relative’s, might better provide the security of feeling safe and cared for. This familiarity, as well as boosting emotional wellbeing, can provide an extra support system for physical health in a space that they know and can move around easily, especially when there is suitable mobility equipment installed. Seniors who receive care at home are often able to receive more personalised care, since caregivers can tailor their care to the specific needs of the individual, allowing them to maintain a sense of individuality and uniqueness. Receiving this one-to-one attention while surrounded by familiar settings, people and their own belongings, can dramatically reduce their risks of anxiety and stress in the long term. In many ways, caring for a loved one at home can be a rewarding and The wonder of wellbeing Caring for elderly and vulnerable family members at home has many obvious benefits when it comes to keeping an eye on health developments from day to day or reducing their risk of accidents around the house. 56 Á 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 20/03/2023 12:09 Page 1© stock.adobe.com/Studio Romantic 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 20/03/2023 12:09 Page 256 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FAMILY MATTERS meaningful experience, providing a sense of purpose and fulfilment. By taking on the duties of a health care provider, while having a deeper, more personal knowledge of what your loved one needs, you can guard them ones from feelings of loneliness, isolation and even depression. Such ailments are all too common with age, if someone is made to feel alienated in their surroundings or left behind by their family. The privilege and pride to be taken in protecting the elderly from mental illness are often not highlighted enough. In the societal tendency to undervalue older members of our families and communities, those who care for their own are powerful examples of the importance to treasure the worth of any life, up until the moment of death. Choosing to bear this responsibility is sometimes a commitment to many years of patience, kindness and putting time aside for someone who needs extra help, all of which can cost high levels of mental and physical energy. However, while the long-term obligation itself can be a heavy ask, taking small steps to foster the happiness of someone you care for needn’t be a struggle. For one, being an encouraging voice to keep someone company while they engage in a favourite hobby or activity can be a huge source of positivity for so small a gesture. Whether it’s arts and crafts, a short walk around a nearby nature spot, or getting meals ready together, these can all provide essential, gentle exercise and happiness-boosting social time. As well as being beneficial for overall health and mood, these regular reminders of what your loved one enjoys in life further supports their sense of identity, independence and purpose. Engaging each other in a fun task also provides opportunities for intellectual stimulation, which can help prevent depression and cognitive decline. On a good day, you can let them pick the activity and let yourself be carried along by their enthusiasm. Sometimes this will be easier than others, but your encouragement is all the more important on days when low mood and lack of motivation need to be lifted to sustain their mental health and emotional wellness, both of which can ultimately impact the immune system and physical health. These simple gestures of kindness involved in caring for an elderly person hold great significance, particularly in providing emotional support during the difficulty of changes in physical and mental abilities. It can be intimidating to feel isolated and alone, and many older individuals may avoid asking for help, even if they are struggling, out of concern for burdening their loved ones. The easiest way to help is to make sure they don’t have to ask, at least not for daily assistance. © stock.adobe.com/Halfpoint 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 20/03/2023 12:09 Page 3Our care and nursing homes provide the highest standards of family-led residential and dementia care.
