Around the garden garden designer to assist as a well-designed garden will ensure that it works for you, is done right the first time, and uses the right materials. I also find when I am asked to design a garden that I can provide original creative ideas which give my clients a bespoke garden. The things you can think about when giving your designer a brief are the practical things such as parking, the washing line, and the kid’s trampoline, but also consider boundaries and walls, the amount and type of planting, paths and patios, the type of furniture and if you would like a water feature. A good designer can assist you with all these areas but if you have a particular style and ideas it can help. We provide 3D visuals, along with 2D, of our garden designs. These are helpful as you can see what your garden will look like once it is complete. Sometimes looking at a bird’s eye view in 2D doesn’t do the design justice, and a 3D view can help you see how you will use your outdoor space. Once you have your design you must be realistic about the time it can take to complete. Again, it may be worth getting the professionals in as they will have the machinery and expertise. Some designers, like me, will also be able to undertake the work. I would advise you to ensure that if you get someone to carry out the work, they are a professional. Always ask for a copy of their public liability insurance, pictures of previous work and maybe references from previous clients. You wouldn’t have your new kitchen fitted by someone who didn’t know what they were doing. Once you have the perfectly designed and created garden all that is left is for you to enjoy it.22 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY GARDENS N ow summer is here, our gardens beckon us outside, creating the perfect time to rethink our outdoor spaces and make new additions that will enhance our enjoyment and use of them. It was here that Lincoln derived its name, originally called Lindon from the Celtic term ‘lindo’, meaning ‘The Pool’. As the city evolved through periods of Roman rule, Viking settlement, and conquest by Saxons and Normans, the signs of these diverse cultures are all waiting to be explored by modern-day visitors. For newcomers seeking a glimpse into Lincoln’s past before embarking on their own exploration of the city, a little historical overview is in order. Romans were the first to establish Lincoln as a significant settlement, erecting a wooden fortress atop its hill around 50 AD. Ermine Street, a crucial thoroughfare linking London to York, became a lifeline for communication between outposts in the two cities. During the Viking era, Lincoln was a vital hub for trade as the heart of the Viking Danelaw. Lincolnshire still bears traces of its Danish legacy in place names ending in -by, such as Grimsby, Wragby, and Spilsby. Lincoln itself bears witness to this influence, with its thoroughfares ending in -gate, a legacy of the Danes, as ‘gate’ simply denotes ‘street’ in the old Nordic parlance. Surrounding villages similarly reflect the Viking period, with -by signifying ‘farmstead’ and -thorpe indicating ‘hamlet’.
