< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFOOD & DININGincoln is a city in flux. Although itwears its rich history with pride, thecity has undergone a massive regenerativetransformation in recent years. This is allculminating to make Lincoln one of the mostattractive cultural hot spots in the UK. Withthe Knights Trail, the Domesday Book and amyriad of other attractions, people from farand wide descend on the cathedral city, explore Bailgate and brave Steep Hillbringing their pocketbooks with them. Forthe Grille Restaurant, located inside TheWhite Hart Hotel on Bailgate, this has beenthe perfect storm. Its recent refurbishmentcoincides with Lincoln’s time in the limelight.Diners will be familiar with the restaurant forits exquisite food, produce and service.Indeed, it frequently comes out with at leastgold or above in our own Dining Awards, and has achieved an AA Rosette for CulinaryExcellence. But for the restaurant itself, therefurbishment was about putting everythingNew menu, new restaurant, same great qualityand service Lincoln’s White Hart Hotel and Restaurant recentlyunderwent a radical refurbishment. Now they’re backwith a brand new look and menu, but don’t worry, theystill have the same great food and service. L60-61_Layout 1 20/06/2017 11:09 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY61FOOD & DININGon the same level as its renowned foodand service. The refurbishment was overseen byLincoln’s own Magari Interior Design, whom The White Hart worked closelywith throughout the refurbishment. Itwas if they were on the samewavelength; with Magari understandingthe brief from the word go and roping inits local contacts. The restaurant was keen on using locallabour wherever possible, and localmaterials. It’s only fitting that a restaurantthat has long championed local producewould want to support regional goods, services and trade. Between 95 – 97 percent of all the materials, services andlabour used was sourced locally, righthere in Lincolnshire. All in all, the refurbishment took threeweeks, and while this was a week longerthan originally anticipated, it is still animpressive feat. We’ve all seen how restaurants andeateries can be closed for months at atime while they’re being kitted out. It’seven more impressive when you considerthat throughout all the works, therestaurant remained opened. The stovesstayed hot, while diners were served inthe impressive Eastgate and KingRichard’s Suite. It’s a commitment lesserestablishments could learn from. This was not simply a makeover, though, but a fresh start. It capitalised onits long standing reputation for excellentfood and service. To accompany therefurbishment a brand new menu waslaunched. Though the grand reopeninghad been delayed by a week, anupcoming event will welcome localbusinesses and those directly involved inthe refurb, to sample the new menu, drink some of the choice local ales andget to know the new look White Hart. Working in partnership with SelectLincolnshire – who awarded The WhiteHart with a ‘Hotel of the Year Award’ lastyear – the menu is a love letter toLincolnshire meat, drink and produce. The White Hart not only practice whatthey preach, but they lead by example. With its refurbishment now complete,The White Hart can enjoy the summer tocome. The flurry of exciting events takingplace in and around Lincoln spells goodfortune for the city’s business. Now therestaurant has a new look that perfectlymatches its top quality food, the dinerswill come through in droves.60-61_Layout 1 20/06/2017 11:09 Page 2LincolnshireheritageexploredOn a summer day in 1938 the fastest speed for asteam locomotive was achieved by Gresley A4“Pacific” locomotive Mallard near Grantham.First some background history. The late C19thand early C20th was a time of great rivalryamongst railway companies both on the continentand in Britain at a time when kudos was gained asmuch from speed and journey times as providingluxury travel. The Great Western locomotive Cityof Truro was the first (unofficially) to exceed 100mph in 1904; actually 102 mph. Competitionhowever developed between the London,Midland & Scottish railway (LMS) and the London& North Eastern Railway (LNER) with theirLondon to Scotland Coronation Scot and SilverLink services with some LNER Gresley A3 locosreaching 100 mph. These included the FlyingScotsman in 1934, prophetically on the samestretch of track that was later to witness Mallard’sachievement, and Gresley’s A4 Silver Linkreaching 112 mph in 1935. But by 1938 theLMS had pushed the record to 114 mph.Sir Nigel Gresley was born on 19th June 1876.His early railway experience was with theLondon North Western and the Lancashire &Yorkshire Railways. He went on to join the GreatNorthern in 1903 and by 1911, aged only 35,was their Chief Mechanical Engineer a positionhe held at the LNER after the railwayamalgamation of 1923. He was knighted in1936 and the following year the LNER alsohonoured him by naming the hundredth A4locomotive after him. He developed an interestin locomotive streamlining and collaboratedwith the famous car maker Ettore Bugatti onthe latest technology. And, as the LMS versusLNER rivalry continued, Gresley decided upon asteam locomotive record attempt. The streamlined A4 Pacific Mallard was builtat the Doncaster works and came into servicein March 1938. Her name was chosen byGresley who was a wildfowl breedingenthusiast – mallards being his favourite andIt was July 1938 and a newworld record was made! Andit happened in Lincolnshire!62-63_Layout 1 20/06/2017 11:10 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY63to call it a day.The record attempt ended on a slightlyignominious note however. The strain ofthe record attempt resulted in Mallardsuffering an overheated big end and shestruggled to reach Peterborough. Fromthere she was replaced by another engineto get the train back to London. Gresleywas told in a triumphant phone callalthough it was only when the trainreached King’s Cross that the dynometercar records could be officially verified, theresult being met with worldwide acclaim.Thereafter Mallard was nicknamed the“Blue Streak”. Gresley’s health meanwhiledeteriorated and he died on 5th April1941. Some years after the world recordsuccess the Green Man inn at LittleBytham was renamed “Mallard” and formany years sported a finely paintedsignboard depicting the locomotive in fullsteam.Once repaired Mallard returned to mainline service and worked through the war,and beyond, until being withdrawn inApril 1963 having by then travelled justover 1,414,000 miles. Since then she hasbeen restored and was “steamed” againfor the 50th anniversary of her recordother bird names of hissuggestion – includingguillemot, gannet and herringgull – were also given to A4’s.Mallard was therefore a mere fourmonths old at the time of therecord attempt and was chosenbecause she was the first to includeseveral new technical features such as theKylchap exhaust and a double blastpipe. ASunday was chosen as the main line wouldbe less busy with fewer trains. The sectionsouth of Grantham was chosen for itsstraightness and slightly downhill gradient. So on 3rd July 1938, with its trueobjective not revealed, just in case offailure, and with even the hand-pickedcrew not told of record attempt until theday, a seven-coach train including adynometer car journeyed north to theBarkston “triangle” just beyond Granthamwhere it could be turned. Sadly Gresleyhimself was ill and not on board. AtBarkston the plans were finally revealed. The run had been ostensibly for brake testsso a team of Westinghouse engineers wason board. They were now given thechance to leave the train. All declined! The record attempt began withdeparture from Barkston South Junction at4.15 pm. Seriously slowed at Grantham –down to 18 mph - because of plate layingwork the speed was up to 85 mph atStoke summit and the train was doing 123mph by Little Bytham where, it is saidsome station windows were broken as itpassed. A record was already establishedbut shortly after 125 mph was reached for10 seconds and finally 126 mph – for onesecond! Driver Joe Duddington afterwardsreckoned he could have got to 130 mphbut bends ahead influenced the decisionachievement. She has also pullednumerous excursion trains and is nowpreserved at the National RailwayMuseum in York.In September 2013 however she madea well-publicised visit to her old stampingground of Grantham where she was seenby many thousands of fans. Today Mallardis commemorated twice at Granthamstation. For the 75th anniversary of herrecord a specially commissionedinformation board was installed onPlatform 1 and there is colourful stainedglass window in the Platform 2 waitingroom. In April 2016, the 75 anniversary ofhis death, a statue of Sir Nigel Gresleywas installed at King’s Cross; there’s nomallard though! (Duck that is!)With the demise of steam – worldwidenot just in Britain – Mallard’s speed recordseems likely to stand unbroken inperpetuity and remain forever part ofLincolnshire’s heritage. A grippingaccount of the whole story can be foundin Don Hale’s book “Mallard”. Right from themoment a person is diagnosed, throughtheir treatment and beyond; Macmillanaims to be a source of support, information, and advice – giving peoplethe energy and inspiration they need tolive their lives. For those who suffer from cancer, it canbe a trying and lonely time. Few expectit, and there are so many myths andmisunderstandings around the issue. It’sdifficult for both the victim, friends andfor family – especially those who aredoing their best to care for the afflicted.Through advice and training for carers, enabling family to look after their lovesones more effectively, through to aconfidential ear to listen to any problemsthe patient might have. Whatever thecase, and whatever the need, Macmillandoes what it can to support – at no costto those in need. The charity was founded in 1911 byDouglas Macmillan, who watched hisfather die of cancer. His father’s pain andsuffering moved him to the point wherehe founded the Society for the Preventionand Relief of Cancer. His goal was toprovide advice and information to allpeople with cancer, homes for patients atlow or no cost, and voluntary nurses toattend to them. Today, much of Douglas’legacy lives on through Macmillan. According to figures, there are 2.5million people who live with cancer in theUK today, and as more people live longerwith their cancer, this is set to grow to 4million by 2030. Macmillan’s aim is toprovide support to each of those people, but the task isn’t one that can becompleted without the support of others. There are many ways to supportMacmillan and the work they do, from© Shutterstock / ESB Professional 67 ÁMacmillan For those with cancer, itcan be a difficult and tryingtime.
