From July 15 until July 17, charities FareShare and the Trussell Trust will be collecting long-life food in large Tesco stores across the UK as part of a special Tesco Food Collection to support children and families throughout the summer holidays. Food donated by Tesco customers during the collection will go to support food banks in the Trussell Trust’s network and to local charities supplied by FareShare, including holiday clubs providing healthy meals and activities to youngsters outside of term-time. Tesco will once again top up customer donations made in store by 20% in cash to aid the two charities in their work. Volunteers are needed to encourage shoppers to leave their donations in the collection point at the front of stores, as shoppers are more likely to donate if volunteers are present, and to spread awareness of the collection through social media. Lincolnshire volunteers needed for summer food collection First airborne humanitarian mission to be honoured at IBCC A new sculpture has been unveiled at the multi-award-winning, International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC), Lincoln. The piece – which has been designed and built by artist Phil Neal – honours Operation Manna, a lifesaving operation by Bomber Command that took place in late Spring 1945. At that time, the west of the Netherlands was subject to severe reprisals by the Nazi force following train strikes in support of Operation Market Garden, which included the Battle of Arnhem. Food was scarce and over 20,000 people had died of starvation with a further 980,000 at risk and classed as malnourished. This was further compounded by the severe winter of 1944/45, becoming known as the Hongerwinter. After an appeal from Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Bernhard, Bomber Command came to the rescue launching Operation Manna. They dropped almost 7,000 tons of food aid over the area, in 3,300 sorties carried out in Lancasters and Mosquitos from 33 Squadrons. This operation had a major impact and has never been forgotten by the Dutch. However, in the UK, this major humanitarian operation is little known. In later years the operation was used as a blueprint for the Berlin Airlift, another major humanitarian mission. The sculpture has been built with the support of the Government’s Cultural Recovery Fund and National Heritage Lottery Fund. © IBCC 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 23/06/2021 07:27 Page 1Works get underway on new College and Public Sector Hub Work has started on the development of a new Further Education College and Public Sector Hub on Horncastle’s Mareham Road. The development will see a new education facility, operated by Boston College, built alongside a Public Sector Hub that will be home to East Lindsey District Council and partner organisations. Having gained planning permission last year, works are now underway following confirmation that Boston College have successfully secured £1,231,490 for the college campus aspect of project from the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership as part of the Government’s Getting Building Fund. The College campus, which will comprise four classrooms and a digital innovation computer-based classroom, will create new learning opportunities in digital skills for individuals aged 16 and over. By introducing a more accessible provision, local businesses will be able to readily access training to meet their skills needs, helping them to grow, increase productivity, and add value to the local economy. This summer, Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) will expand its life-saving service with a second helicopter responding to emergencies on the Lincolnshire coast. As the UK emerges from COVID restrictions and families take up more staycations, it is anticipated that there will be an influx of visitors to the county’s popular seaside destinations. The charity is already seeing a rise in missions across its patch and was deployed to 148 emergencies in April this year, compared with 49 over the same period last year. In anticipation of the busy summer ahead, LNAA will have a Critical Care Car dedicated to the east coast from 1 June and the helicopter will take over from 21 June until 31 August. LNAA’s Medical Director, Doctor Gareth Davies, was the lead consultant on the Paddington rail disaster, was a medical commander at the 7/7 bombings and oversaw the team that treated the victims at the Westminster Bridge terror attacks in 2017. The second helicopter, an AW109 will be on call from Strubby Airfield, close to Mablethorpe. Although a different colour, the helicopter will have the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance name and carry the same life-saving medical equipment as our iconic yellow helicopter. The charity’s highly trained doctors and paramedics will be on board, bringing the emergency department to the patient with the ability to give blood transfusions, deliver an emergency anaesthetic, and even perform surgery at the roadside. Karen Jobling, LNAA’s CEO, said: “It’s been a tough year for the charity sector and for LNAA we have seen around £1 million loss in projected fundraising income. We know the situation could have been worse and it’s only thanks to our amazing supporters that we’ve been able to get through it and have the ability to provide this additional Helicopter Emergency Medical Service to people on the Lincolnshire coast this summer.” Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance responds to a summer like no other © Shutterstock/Bannafarsai_Stock 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 23/06/2021 07:27 Page 2latest news Trio of Lincolnshire towns awarded over £30m © Shutterstock/Thomas Holt Three Lincolnshire towns have been awarded millions in grant funding from the Government’s Future High Street Fund to transform their centres. Scunthorpe will receive more than £10 million of government cash to redevelop the former market site in the heart of the town centre. Meanwhile more than £17 million has been awarded to deliver sweeping changes to the heart of Grimsby, including a fresh home for Grimsby’s Top Town Market, a new cinema and leisure units nearby. Work will now start on planning the delivery of this key project for the town centre in the coming years. Grantham has been allocated £5.56 million for an ambitious programme of regeneration. Detailed plans for key projects to revive Grantham’s high street and town centre are now being finalised. Pilot scheme to tackle Covid-19 in South Holland given green light A pilot scheme to tackle COVID-19 transmission in South Holland, where rates remain stubbornly high, has been given approval by Government. Rates in South Holland still remain higher than the national average. Like other parts of the country with enduring transmission, the working age population has the highest rate of COVID-19 cases. As a result, South Holland District Council along with Peterborough City Council and Fenland District Council, where rates are also persistently higher than average, submitted a proposal to Government for funding to provide additional support for employees and employers in specific sectors. The Government has now confirmed that it has allocated £2.6 million to allow the pilot to be rolled out across the three areas over the next three months. It is the first pilot of its kind to be given the go-ahead by Government. The bid will focus on: * Increased job security for many employees in the food production and packaging/warehouse sectors. Many employees fear they will lose their jobs if they self-isolate. The council will work with key agencies such as the Gangmaster and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA), engage with agencies and employers to support them to increase job security for workers self-isolating * ‘Safe’ transport for travel to work. The council will pilot a limited network of COVID-safe public transport links across South Holland, Peterborough, and Fenland for the transportation of those living in rural areas to the workplaces that are being targeted * Improving accessibility to the £500 test and trace support payments as well as potentially providing additional payments in some circumstances where there is financial hardship. © Shutterstock / Simon Kadula 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 23/06/2021 07:28 Page 3Lincolnshire councils receive £3m to help rough sleepers Lincolnshire councils have secured further government funding to continue providing help and support to prevent rough sleeping and to help people to exit the streets successfully. The Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government has awarded nearly £3 million funding to Lincolnshire from the Government’s Rough Sleeping Initiative for the 2021/2022 financial year. The funding will be allocated to allow Lincolnshire councils to give help to those who need it and to support for vital initiatives such as housing, specialist mental health support, help to address substance use and addictions, and more targeted support to help individuals to exit the streets for good. “As well as a providing housing solutions, residents will also be able to receive support in their next steps of life moving forward,” said Councillor Martin Griggs, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Communities at Boston Borough Council. “This will have a positive impact on the lives of many individuals across the Borough of Boston.” © Shutterstock/Andrey_Popov Auto Trail Motorhome Rental Reserve Your Ride Check out the availability and book your trip with a £250 deposit.
