Whilst these might conjure up images of an idyllic summer spent lounging at the beach, they can spell disaster for your skin and hair. Extreme heat, salt water and harsh sand can sadly have drying, and ageing effects, potentially marring a fun- filled beach trip. Yet, fear not! There are ways to protect your skin and hair with minimum effort, and without compromising on your fun. Furthermore, we’ll explore safe ways to look like you’ve spent hours in the sun, without compromising on your wellbeing. Firstly, and most importantly, sunscreen is an absolute must. Dermatologists will tell you that everyone should be applying sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and the number on a sunscreen bottle indicates how much protection it will give you from UVB rays. UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn, whilst UVA rays cause skin damage, wrinkles, and other signs of premature ageing. If the term ‘broad spectrum’ appears on your sunscreen bottle, that indicates UVA protection in addition to UVB protection. In reality, you should always look for broad spectrum SPF, as this will give you the most protection. Experts recommend choosing products with an SPF of at least 30. On days of prolonged sun exposure, such as hiking, or beach days, you should be using SPF 50. The effects of sunscreen will lessen throughout the day, so be sure to reapply. This is especially important if you’re in water, as the reflective nature of water will amplify the sun’s effects. Similarly, be wary of the sea breeze. Wind can act as an irritant to the skin, exfoliating it and causing new layers to be exposed to sunlight. New layers are more sensitive and so are more likely to be damaged by UV rays. Important to remember is that even if your daily moisturiser, foundation, or tinted moisturiser claims to contain SPF, you still need to apply a dedicated sunscreen underneath. This is because the amount of sunscreen within these products will likely be relatively little, in comparison to the amount required to provide real protection. Whilst it is still a good idea to find beauty products containing sunscreen, these should be seen as bonus protection. No matter what stage of life you’re at, it’s never too late to start, and starting later is never a lost cause. Jumping on board the SPF train now will help to prevent any further serious sun damage, and will provide a barrier to your skin so that it may work on repairing existing damage. That’s right – sun damage can be improved! Whilst SPF is an essential, it will not block the sun’s rays 100%. Choosing the right accessories can provide the dual purpose of creating an eye-catching beach look, whilst providing much needed sun protection. Why not complete your look with a wide-brim hat for a touch of elegance, or a baseball cap for a cool LA-look? This will help to shield your scalp, eyes and face whilst looking put together. As an oft neglected area, scalp protection is incredibly important, and can be incredibly painful if it burns. Not to mention that a red scalp will ruin an expensive blow-out! Most popular sunscreen brands offer a hair and scalp serum, which provides protection without reducing you to an oil slick. A summer staple, sunglasses are also a good way to reduce eye strain and damage in bright weather. Choosing wider frames will help shield your face too. Although darker lenses might reduce the effects of brightness levels on the eye, it has nothing to do with effective protection against UV rays. When choosing new sunglasses, be sure to look for ones which advertise certified UV protection. The optimum protection level is UV400, which can filter out up to 99% of both UVA and UVB rays. This is a little higher than the requirements of British Standards for eye protection, but absolutely the best choice to ensure the best possible protection from sun damage. Whilst we know that spending too long in the sun is bad for us, it’s undeniable that the effortlessly tanned, beachy- waved look is an enduringly tantalising image that many of us strive to replicate. The good news is that there are a plethora of beauty products on the market to give you that healthy glow. If the idea of fake tan feels daunting, you can opt for a gradual tanner instead, to build up a natural glow. Simply exfoliate in the shower beforehand, then apply as you would a body moisturiser. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are more intense products available. A tanning mousse is lightweight and easy to blend. Simply apply using a tanning mitt, allow 4 – 8 hours for it to develop and rinse off in the shower. A tanning mousse can last up to 2 weeks. Ensure not to leave on any longer than the maximum recommended time to avoid looking orange. Alternatively, a tanning water is a no-rinse option that, once applied with a mitt, will develop over 8 hours, and will naturally adapt to your skin tone. With whatever product you choose, remember to thoroughly wash your hands after application! Key tips are to moisturise before applying fake tan, and exfoliate 48 hours after, and just before application to ensure an even and long- lasting look! If you love the tousled look, but the idea of salt water in your hair makes you cringe, why not try a sea salt spray? Simply spray on freshly washed hair, scrunching it up for extra hold, and away you go. This can be carefully brushed out at the end of the day without drying out your hair. This could be combined with loose curls, created using a wide-barrelled curling tong for a more structured appearance. Simply choose random strands of hair around your head to curl, using alternate curling directions to give extra bounce. Use the sea salt spray to finish after curling, which will also act as a hairspray. 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 20/06/2022 10:37 Page 2Next >
