COASTAL FUN When one looks back to Lincolnshire in the past, we’re well- known as a place for export and import, of trading and commerce, with powerful ports and market towns that were known across the world. That might be all in the past now, but our coastlines remain, and they are stories and beautiful locations that draw thousands of visitors each year. When one thinks of a Lincolnshire coastline the word “traditional” comes up a lot, and tradition is something that many of our coastal resorts like Skegness, Mablethorpe and Cleethorpes have kept hold of, with attractions like donkey rides, carousels and colourful beach houses on display. For families looking to have a little fun or thrill seekers in search of the next big adventure, our coasts have plenty of options and opportunities. On the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds lays the Lincolnshire Aqua Park, a park choc full of interesting activities and water-based challenges included their very own Wipeout course styled after the titular show. If you’d prefer to stay out on the beaches, however, there are plenty of opportunities to go paddleboarding in Lincolnshire’s waters, with numerous venues and local companies offering courses, training and rental gear. If water isn’t your thing – or if the kids want something a little less like exercise – then you could do worse than to visit the Dunes Leisure Mablethorpe Fairground where numerous rides and attractions will be in full swing in the warmer months and toward the start of summer. If you’re less interested in vistas and more interested in animals then you might be surprised just how many sanctuaries, wildlife zones and zoos there are on our coastline. From the Jungle Zoo in Cleethorpes which hosts lizards, snakes and parrots, to Natureland Seal Sanctuary in Skegness – who host more than just seals, mind you. Penguins, alpacas and even a family of Meerkats make Natureland their home, the latter being very inquisitive and firm favourites thanks to Disney and a certain car insurance comparison website. Skegness also features the Skegness aquarium, which focuses both on entertainment and education, with numerous fish, a nursing shark and even an octopus. We’ve mentioned the Lincolnshire Wolds already as an area of outstanding natural beauty and a must-visit destination, but our coastlines also feature their own walks. There really are too many to list, and more can be found online, but some of our favourites, and the most well-known, include the Coastal Path, a rather hefty 26km (16 miles) trek from Skegness to Mablethorpe, which may not be for the fair of heart or leg! Far more relaxed walks include Anderby Creek, Chapel Point and several sections of the Viking Way. For those less looking for excitement and more for a chance to go shopping, our coasts don’t disappoint. Being a coastal region, we have many shopping centres not far from the sea, including the obvious mentions we’ve already covered. Not too far from the coast is Boston, Spilsby and Louth however, market towns with plenty to offer in terms of quality and quantity. Lincolnshire has ever been a commercial and mercantile county, ever since the medieval ages, and this legacy has continued now. Along the way, both in these towns and nestled away in picturesque coastal scenery, are many restaurants, country pubs and inns that do our foody heritage proud. Coastal fun Lincolnshire’s coasts are packed full of fun of all kinds, much of which might not be immediately obvious. © stock.adobe.com/Anthony Dillon © stock.adobe.com/mrpics© stock.adobe.com/simon LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 7576 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20 Growing tension is starting to build up regarding a matter of principles because no one can seem to agree with anything nor reach a suitable compromise. Locals are mocking their council after the road sign made to honour the late Queen was misspelled, raising questions as to whether anyone bothered to check it when made or as it was installed. The error saw Queen Elizabeth Avenue accidentally renamed “Queeen Elizabeth Avenue” — introducing an additional ‘e’. A spokesperson from North Lincolnshire Council apologised for the oversight and called it “simple human error,” while residents were left to wonder how many hands the sign had gone through without anyone noticing it. Time to chime A Lincolnshire ice cream van owner has received a complaint letter from East Lindsey District Council after a Louth resident shared their disapproval of the van’s “overly loud” and frequent chimes. The council’s letter highlights the complaint that the chimes are “used excessively” between 6pm and 7pm in good weather. Speaking to the BBC, the owner of Harrison’s Ices said the music is well within government guidelines. He added: “It’s frustrating, it’s 12 to 15 seconds of music and it’s not in your ear.
