After putting so much effort in over summer, the temperature drops, the wind picks up and there’s just not as much sun, so your skin is left looking rough, dry, drab and dehydrated. Fortunately, there’s some easy switches and self-care tips to ensure you’ve got beautiful, healthy and hydrated skin all through autumn. In summer, we’re all about doing away with a heavy moisturising in favour of a toner, but now’s the time to switch back. Adding a rich moisturising to your routine is a great way for skin to adjust to the changing season and will help form a protective barrier against the cold and wind. Exfoliating at least twice a week is absolutely critical to stop skin from becoming dull and dehydrated. It increases cellular regeneration and removes dead skin so moisturisers and serums can be more easily absorbed. Try opting for products with natural exfoliants such as sugar or apricot seed powder. They’ve become much easier to find on shelves since the microbead ban, so you shouldn’t have a hard time tracking a good one down. It’s also worth introducing an oil-based scrub to your routine. This miracle product polishes and hydrates skin all at once, ensuring skin looks great without drying out. Ensuring skin doesn’t dry out is a constant battle this time of year, so moisturising is absolutely non-negotiable. No ifs, no buts, just find yourself a decent moisturiser that works for you and apply it every morning. You can also find a suitable night cream to use before getting your beauty sleep. Moisturising should also be applied to your lips to stop them from drying out and cracking. For the best results try a natural non-petroleum balm – that means it’s time to end that love affair with Vaseline. For a simple tip for luscious lips, lightly buff them with your toothbrush after you’ve cleaned your teeth. This essentially exfoliates the skin and, when paired with a balm, with keep you looking kissable. But let’s not go forgetting about the rest of your skin now. After all, dry skin doesn’t just affect your face. Body lotions are best applied just after bathing when the skin is still slightly damp. Just make it a normal part of your beauty regime and it will quickly become habit. Not only will this crucial step help keep skin hydrated, it’ll also ensure softness and ease the sting of any razor burns you might have. Of course, if you prefer not to shave, you can always use coconut or argan oil to keep body hair looking beautiful, soft and healthy. That’s your face and body taken care of, but it can be easy to forget about your hands. Make sure you’ve always got a decent hand cream within arm’s reach. Trust us, you’ll be needing it. Hand cream alone isn’t always enough, especially when it comes to cuticles. Autumn can leave your cuticles looking anything other than cute, so it might be worth investing in cuticle oil. That goes for double if you’re planning on getting a manicure anytime soon. It’s easy to forget about sun protection this time of year, what with the overcast skies and regular rainfall, but the sun’s rays can still affect your skin whatever the weather. Okay, so you’re not likely to get burnt this time of year – an Indian summer notwithstanding – but UVAs are still present and can lead to the premature ageing of skin. Don’t fret, just make sure your moisturiser comes with a high UVA protection. For some extra help in hydrating skin, try a weekly sheet mask. You could also go all out and opt for a professional facial. There’s plenty of great salons and spas all across Lincolnshire to choose from. In the home, however, it might be worth thinking about a humidifier. They work best if they’re running as soon as you put the heating on. We all want a warm snuggly house in autumn, but central heating can dry out skin. With a humidifier, you get the best of both worlds. You should also be hydrating from within and that means drinking plenty of fluids. For the best results, you should also be eating foods rich in fatty acids, such as avocadoes, nuts, oily fish and seeds. With this helpful guide, you’ll look stunning all through the autumn. 44-45.qxp_Layout 1 19/08/2021 13:37 Page 246 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HEALTH & FTINESS It’s evident to many that there is an obesity problem within the UK, and our county is no different. Results for the UK and Ireland suggest that 62.9% of adults (aged 16 or over) are listed as overweight or obese. This has hardly been helped by lockdown leaving so many people isolated and unable to exercise as they may have before. While the breakdown between men and women is roughly average, the results suggest that men are more likely to classify as overweight, with more women being obese. This is no fault of either gender, but instead is because obesity is measured by BMI values, and men can carry more weight while maintaining a healthier BMI. People who are classed as obese will suffer from many health risks, not to mention a lower quality of life. These risks can include a higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes, being more likely to develop cancer or a higher chance of gaining high blood pressure – a major risk for stroke and heart disease. Yet again, this can be worse for woman than it is for men. Official research from Public Health England suggests that where obesity in men will make them five times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes; the same level of obesity would make a woman thirteen times more likely! This is obviously a large problem, not only for the individual, but for the NHS which has to deal with the fallout of such. On the flip side, the benefits of having a healthy weight are myriad, and contain both physiological health benefits and mental ones too, including reduced stress, better moods and more self-worth. While losing weight is a combination of diet and activity, studies show that it is the latter we have sacrificed in recent years. Our lifestyles have become more sedentary and that has made getting the exercise we need a difficult task. Gym memberships are now commonplace but have not led to enough of a change to call the matter closed. Perhaps the most obvious reason is that while gyms are a fantastic way to lose weight, it can be difficult for people to keep at them when faced not only with other people doing better than you (who we all subconsciously compare ourselves to), but also with the lack of mental stimulation they provide. Let’s face it, running on a treadmill isn’t fun; otherwise losing weight would be a simple task indeed. Sports are far more likely to reduce in long-term weight Making a change Sports and activities are the best ways to lose weight, yet so often we refuse to consider them. Is it time for this mentality to change? 46-47.qxp_Layout 1 19/08/2021 13:39 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 47 HEALTH & FTINESS Classes include: FITNESS PILATES, BOOGIE BOUNCE, CLUBBERCISE, MENS ONLY PILATES, SESSIONS FITBALL, SESSIONS PUMP, FUNKY STEP, CARDIO DANCE FIX and more! Our ability to jog, kick box or play rugby is something we can measure in the results we achieve, and it feels good to see ourselves improving. Because most sports also involve other people, it’s a chance to make new friends – or just to do something new with existing friends. This makes the grind far easier, because instead of running for what feels like six hours on a machine, other people help to distract the mind and make the process go faster. With lockdown easing, it’s never been a better time to pick up an activity either. Chances are that most of the people going there will also be new as well. True results are also gained when the body is pushed beyond what it can comfortably achieve, which is a difficult prospect for most people as every part of their body will be urging them to stop and rest. Competitive sport, however, makes it easy to keep going – mostly because, deep inside, it’s a human desire to win and be successful. What holds many back from investigating sports and activities such as these is often self-consciousness. It might be about weight, but sometimes it’s about what is perceived as being “too old” or “too mature” for such things. Sports are for schools and children, or so our minds claim, when the opposite could not be truer. Sports are played by people of all ages, and if it takes releasing the inner child a little to get into one, then why not? Our inner child is probably a lot fitter than we are. © Shutterstock /wavebreakmedia © Shutterstock /Ruslan Huzau © Shutterstock /Boris Ryaposov with Ola 46-47.qxp_Layout 1 19/08/2021 13:39 Page 2healthy Just because we’re seeing the back of summer, doesn’t mean we need to bid bon voyage to healthy food and fare.
