SundayLunchservedfrom12-6pmSeptember marks the beginning of autumn but also, for the younger generation, a movement up to a new year, a new school, or even university. The news coming out last month that A-Level grades have dropped on average must have come as a shock and a worry to many, but everyone knows it’s due to the pandemic interrupting school, and any employer worth their salt is going to know that as well. A simple explanation in any interview is sure to be enough to explain such away if those grades are even of any interest to an employer at all. It’s certainly the case that we, among many other businesses, are more interested in examples of work history than we are grades, even if that work history is just a paper round or a part-time job in a pub, café, or shop. Moving away from academics, September is the start of new fashion trends as fall season comes in, and it’s the beginning of colder weather, which may come as a relief given how hot August turned out to be. Our magazine this month browses the latest trends both out on the streets and in the home. We look at the latest jobs to get started on in the garden, and how to get back into shape now that the days aren’t so hot that going for a jog or a bicycle ride will cost you several gallons of sweat. All that and more in our September issue. Good reading, as always. It has acquired Alexandra Retail Park, Alexandra Road, for an undisclosed sum from an institutional vendor, as part of its proactive acquisition drive in shopping parades, centres and retail parks across the country. The 125,695 sq ft retail park comprises eight units, with tenants Matalan, SCS, The Food Warehouse, My Energi Ltd, Argos, Pets at Home and Poundstretcher. There are also about 560 parking spaces for shoppers. Barry Flint, LCP director and asset manager at Alexandra Retail Park, said: “Alexandra Retail Park is well positioned in the town and has a strong tenant line-up. We’ll be exploring options over the next few weeks to see how we can add to it further.” Twelve properties have been acquired by South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) to provide homes for families fleeing war-torn countries around the world. They will initially be used as temporary housing for Afghan and Ukrainian evacuee families who have arrived legally in the UK. The homes will later be occupied by families on the SKDC Housing Register. The cost of just over £1.8m was funded jointly from the Government’s Local Authority Housing Fund and the Council’s Housing Revenue Account budget. The 12 homes in Langtoft, near Market Deeping, are the first of a total of 21 earmarked for the scheme in South Kesteven, which was supported by Full Council, and are a mix of two and three-bedroom new-build houses and two-bedroom bungalows. SKDC’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, Cllr Phil Dilks, said: “This process will help refugees at a time when they need it the most, having escaped the prospect of terrible suffering in their own countries.” A new report by Global Tourism Solutions has highlighted the record-breaking benefits of tourism in Boston, with over £95m of economic impact in 2022 alone. The findings showed the £95.13m of investment from tourists to be the highest since the data was first recorded in 2011, up from £70.96m in 2021. In terms of visitors, the report found that 1.3m people visited Boston during 2022, up from 1.09m the previous year, with 210,000 staying in the Borough and over a million visiting for the day. Shopping and enjoying the local hospitality were the two most popular activities, with almost £26m spent in the Borough’s shops and over £20m in its cafes, restaurants, and bars. There were also 1,044 tourism-related jobs across Boston for the year, a 27% increase from 2021 and showing nearly a full recovery to the pre-pandemic levels of employment in the sector. © stock.adobe.com/ kwanchaift latest news New housing to meet humanitarian needs takes a step forward Tourism brings record £95m economic benefit to Boston © stock.adobe.com/ JamieFlying Freemasons boost charity fundraising efforts Taking to the skies over Lincolnshire enabled the county’s Freemasons to add a further £1,000 to their ambition to raise £2.25m for charity during a five-year fundraising campaign. More than 50 people took the opportunity to fly a glider or powered aircraft from Kirton Lindsey in an event organised by the Freemasons with the help of Trent Valley Gliding Club. They described it variously as ‘wonderful’, ‘exhilarating’, ‘marvellous’, ‘thrilling’, and ‘a brilliant day’. On the day 32 took the opportunity for a glider flight, and 22 took the powered flight option. Nick Probert, from Scunthorpe, was given the opportunity to take the controls during a powered flight, and said: “It was great – until we hit a bit of turbulence. I was happy to hand control back to someone who knew what they were doing…” With money ultimately going to the Freemasons’ charity the MCF to help it support good causes in Lincolnshire and elsewhere, the five-year fundraising campaign aspires to raise £2.25m – but more than that ultimately comes back to Lincolnshire. Mablethorpe’s new public swimming pool is being filled with water to test it, marking an important milestone for the long-awaited facility for the town. When completed, the swimming pool will be part of the new Station Leisure and Learning Centre, being built on the site of the current Station Sports Centre. The 3,000 sq m centre is set to increase and improve the leisure opportunities for residents and visitors to the town and supports improved physical and mental health wellbeing. Work is running to schedule and is due to be complete next year. Funded from £7.4m Town Deal funding from the government through the Connected Coast Town Deal, the development includes a new swimming pool, a changing village, fitness suite and studios as well as a new play area. The centre will also provide new digital learning and skills opportunities. Filling starts at Mablethorpe swimming pool Greater Lincolnshire gains Defence Cluster status Greater Lincolnshire is now recognised by the Government as a Regional Defence and Security Cluster (RDSC). The cluster was officially launched following approval by the Government’s Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA). Established by the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, the cluster will support innovation in the field of intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance. The ambition is to establish Greater Lincolnshire as a national defence and security innovation, production and service hub and to promote the area’s ability to develop and support vital defence and security programmes. Two other existing clusters are the South West RDSC and the Three Counties RDSC in the West Midlands. The clusters, which may be physical or virtual, allow industry and Government to share ideas, promoting collaboration and commercialisation. They are intended to develop innovative regional industrial capabilities to contribute to UK military capability by creating collaborative pathways for SMEs as a route into the defence supply chain. © stock.adobe.com/ Iuliia Sokolovska L-R: Jim Pennycook from the Defence and Security Accelerator; Professor Deeph Chana, Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA); Alison Ballard, head of Audit at BAE Systems and deputy chair of the Greater Lincolnshire LEP Defence and Security Board; Major General Julian Free CBE, deputy vice chancellor at the University of Lincoln and chair of the Greater Lincolnshire LEP Defence and Security Board; and Sir John Peace, chairman of the Midlands Engine. Village’s hopes for new play area take significant step forward A village’s hopes for a new play area have taken a significant step forward, as South Holland District Council and The Moultons Parish Council announced plans for a new 50-year lease of suitable lands at Moulton Park. The District Council made the decision to lease a third of an acre piece of land to the Parish Council following a desire from local councillors and residents to see the space made available for public use and to create a safe and accessible outdoor space for children in the village. Under the proposal a section of the park (14,520 sq ft) would be made available to the Parish Council on an initial 50-year long lease for a peppercorn rent, where the councils would then work together to attain planning permission for a play area. Both councils are working towards finalising plans as soon as possible to allow work to get underway without any further delays. latest news © stock.adobe.com/famveldman Byyourside then, nowand inthefuture Learn about our free Will Writing Service at ambucopter.org.uk/will Ourfirsthelicopter,1994 LNAACT REG CHARITY 1017501*Offers available on selected plots only at selected developments and cannot be used in conjunction with any other offers.
