Whilst there is a plethora of ways to straightforwardly incorporate these hues into your hair and makeup routine, you may also want to think about the aesthetics that come with this time of year. © stock.adobe.com/SergioLINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 39 HAIR & BEAUTY R egular Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok users will know that trends like Dark Academia and Old Money rule the cultural landscape during the fall season, in a large part because of the emphasis on cozy, dark neutral tones. These trends follow a definite pattern regarding hair and beauty. We explore the meaning behind these trending aesthetics, and how you can use them to up your beauty game this autumn. First of all – what do we mean by the terms Dark Academia and Old Money? Dark Academia, an aesthetic and subcultural phenomenon, gained prominence on social media platforms, notably Tumblr and Instagram. It finds its creative wellspring in the realms of timeless literature, art, history, and academia, with a central emphasis on the values of intellectualism, nostalgia, and a profound passion for the pursuit of knowledge. Frequently, it integrates subdued, nature-inspired hues and a fondness for enduring, classic fashion choices. The Old Money aesthetic is a set of style and cultural preferences linked to individuals and families who have inherited wealth, typically originating from well-established and often aristocratic lineages. This aesthetic places a strong emphasis on adopting a reserved and understated approach to matters of fashion, lifestyle, and personal values. Whilst there are definite similarities between the two (such as the heavy inspiration from vintage styles), there is more room for experimentation with Dark Academia, as there is less emphasis on trying to emulate a well- documented sub-class of society. In terms of colour inspiration, those following Dark Academia may choose to incorporate deep reds and yellows, whereas Old Money prefers more grounded tones such as navy, beige, grey, and white. If you feel more drawn to the cozy, yet awe-inspiring imagery of the library of a prestigious university, let’s explore how you can look like you belong there. The style is a beautiful blend of classic, vintage-inspired elements that create an intellectual and scholarly appearance with a touch of nostalgia. Every masterpiece starts with a clean canvas. Opt for a light foundation or tinted moisturizer to create an even skin tone. Keep it matte, as dewier skin is more reminiscent of the summertime. The eyes is where you can be the most experimental with a Dark Academia look. Firstly, shape and define your eyebrows into dark and well-defined arches. Use an eyebrow pencil or powder to fill them in, giving that slightly dramatic shape reminiscent of the 1920s. Your eyeshadow should reflect the earthy, intellectual tones of an old-fashioned school. Choose shades like deep browns, burgundy, or forest green. Start with a neutral base (peach or bone eyeshadow) and blend darker shades into the crease for depth and dimension. Adding a vintage-inspired winged eyeliner or smudged kohl pencil along the upper lash line adds that touch of nostalgia and sophistication. Finish off with a light touch of mascara to open the eyes but remove any clumps to maintain a more natural allure. Dark Academia often features lips that make a statement. Choose deep, berry or red-toned lipsticks with a matte finish for a bold look. If subtlety is more your style, opt for a muted, nude lip colour that complements the overall aesthetic. A rosy flush to the cheeks would wonderfully complement a nude lip – giving the afterglow of an autumn stroll. Apply a subtle blush to the apples of your cheeks. The goal is to achieve a naturally flushed look, avoiding heavy contouring. Finish your look by piling your hair into a messy bun or low ponytail to give the appearance of having been up late studying. For a more stylised finish, loosely curl your hair with a wide-barrel curling wand. Run your fingers after cooling to avoid looking too structured. In the world of beauty and sophistication, Old Money style makeup embodies a timeless, refined allure that speaks of sophistication and grace. Firstly, choose a foundation that embodies quality and longevity. It should offer a natural finish, emphasizing flawlessness without appearing overly matte. Subtle radiance is the goal. Old Money style calls for well- groomed, subtly defined eyebrows. Employ an eyebrow pencil or powder to sculpt and fill them in, imparting a polished and distinguished look. For eyeshadow, adhere to a palette of neutral, earthy tones—soft browns, taupes, and champagne hues. Keep your eyeshadow application delicate and seamlessly blended for a classic, timeless allure. If you are not confident with eyeshadow blending, stick to one colour across the eyelid and bring it up into the crease. To compliment this natural look, a thin line of brown or black eyeliner along your upper lash line is all you need. Avoid bold wings or dramatic lines—let subtlety and sophistication reign. You can finish your eye look with a sweep of mascara, or forego it entirely for a more natural feel. Opt for lip colours that stand the test of time—soft pinks, muted reds, or elegant mauves. A matte or satin finish complements the aesthetic perfectly. To maintain the refined look, use a lip liner in the same colour as your lipstick to crisply define your lips. Subtle contouring and highlighting can enhance your features, with a focus on sculpting cheekbones and adding a gentle radiance to high points for that high-class look. To give balance, delicately apply a peach or light pink blush above your contour and blend together for an effortless flush. Finish your face with a sweep of translucent setting powder across your t-zone and chin to maintain your polished look throughout the day. Opt for a classic hairstyle like a neat bun, soft waves, or a timeless updo. Elevate your look with hair accessories such as pearls or delicate hairpins, embodying timeless grace.Next >
