These actions may seem small, but the donations they raise helps Breast Cancer Now work towards an important goal; that by 2050, everyone diagnosed with breast cancer will survive, and go on to thrive. Breast cancer stands as the most prevalent cancer in the UK, affecting approximately one in seven women during their lifetime. One person is diagnosed every ten minutes, meaning this Breast Cancer Awareness Month alone is expected to bring around 5,000 new diagnoses. Despite these daunting statistics, there is hope. Survival rates have steadily improved over the past four decades, with a twofold increase in the UK. Nearly nine out of ten women now conquer breast cancer, celebrating five years or more of enjoying life cancer free. The number of those number of people living in the UK following a diagnosis only continues to rise as awareness grows, and crucial research provides the best chance of stopping breast cancer in its tracks. Sex and gender are foremost factors in risk, as over 99% of new cases occur in cisgender women or people assigned female at birth. However, as everyone has some breast tissue, anyone can be affected. Age plays a significant role, with more than 80% of cases occurring in women aged over fifty, while having a family history of breast cancer is an Breast Cancer Now, the UK’s largest breast cancer research charity, makes every October an event for raising both the funds and awareness that combat breast cancer. However, it’s crucial to emphasise that breast cancer can touch the life of anyone, regardless of age or pre-indicated risk. That’s not to mention the families and loved ones of everybody who develops the illness. For the sake of many lives and a multitude of reasons, awareness of screening and early detection is vital. Even in the worst case of a diagnosis, opting to get your breasts checked means getting the health care you need with the least possible delay. But according to recent data released by the NHS, nearly four out of ten eligible women choose not to attend their regular breast screening. Here’s what the facts and figures look like, and it’s not all bad news. During the 2021-22 period, 1.97 million women aged 50 to 70 attended their screening appointments within six months of receiving an invitation. But it’s also worth noting that these numbers are the result of a record- breaking number of invitations for breast screening appointments. Last year, the NHS issued 3.17 million invitations—the highest ever for a single year. Even more hopefully, the number of actual screenings conducted climbed to an unprecedented 2.06 million during the year, as this number also included those who sought screenings of their own volition. 53 BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH T: 07702293727 E: marcus@mjpsupplies.co.uk W: www.mjpsupplies.co.uk Suppliers of a range of liquid storage tanks for: • Oil • adblue • Water • Fertiliser Stockists of Portek Bird Scarers Watch your profits grow For the purpose of importing and selling Algifol™ biostimulant products to farmers and growers of specialist crops PRINTING|COPYING|GRAPHIC DESIGN N 01522 546118 E sales@lincolncopycentre.co.uk www.lincolncopycentre.co.uk High Quality Print & Design in Lincolnshire This last figure in particular shows the power of raising awareness. By fostering a community in which we remind each other to care for our own health, we will further boost the numbers of people who go for their screenings even when invitations slip through the net. But better still, this will encourage everyone, no matter their risk level, to check their breasts regularly at home. Each person’s breasts are unique, so it’s essential to be familiar with what’s normal for you. Regular breast self- examinations are crucial, and you can incorporate this practice into your daily routine—whether in the bath or shower, while getting dressed, or when applying body lotion. Don’t forget to examine all areas, including the armpits and up to the collarbone. If you notice any changes, don’t hesitate to consult a doctor. Here it’s also key to remember that lumps are not the only potential sign of cancer. Other unusual changes, including in skin texture or nipple inversion, are important warning signs to stay aware of. Although the vast majority of breast lumps are not cancerous, seeking professional advice is always the best course of action. Common-sense measures such as limiting alcohol consumption, refraining from smoking, maintaining an active lifestyle, and following a balanced diet are well-known preventive strategies. However, there are lesser-known ways to reduce risk, such as breastfeeding, which studies have linked to a lower likelihood of developing breast cancer, although the exact mechanisms remain under investigation. Though the impact of menopause in many at higher risk can be hard to manage, limiting the dose and duration of hormone therapy is a good idea for reducing your breast cancer risk margin as much as possible. For some women a mastectomy may become necessary, either as a cancer treatment or as a preventative measure. A decade ago this year, Angelina Jolie underwent a double mastectomy, highlighting the reality for those at very high risk – 87% in the actress’s case. But beyond that, Jolie gave powerful visibility to women who face the potential stigma of this surgery, which can mean sacrificing a personally important part of their femininity. To alleviate this, women who need mastectomies can choose breast reconstruction, which can be performed during the mastectomy or at a later time, using implants or tissue from other parts of the body. Alternatively, breast prostheses can be worn inside a bra to restore a natural appearance. Breast cancer will touch many of us directly or indirectly at some point in our lives—whether through personal experience or witnessing a loved one’s journey. This makes October everyone’s chance to join the campaign and lend our support. There are virtually limitless ways to get involved, with annual events including the Race for Life, first organised by Cancer Research UK in 1994. On a smaller scale, there are opportunities for hosting coffee mornings, bake sales and individual sponsored fitness challenges. Online platforms like JustGiving make fundraising easier than ever, with the assurance that your donations go directly to the charity. Last but not least, you can always go for a humble cash donation; a simple but no less meaningful contribution to this life-saving cause. © stock.adobe.com/okrasiuk56 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HISTORICAL HOUSES G unby Hall could be considered one of the main reasons Skegness is here today! The hall, reached by a ½ mile long private driveway, is a country house in the village of Gunby, near Spilsby, in Lincolnshire, also known as Tennyson’s ‘Haunt of Ancient Peace’ – Lord Tennyson was friends of the owners and after visiting the hall a few times he found the beauty and enchantment of the place irresistible and so wrote about the hall which is the long-standing home of the Massingberd family. A beautiful 42- room building in a ‘William and Mary’ red brick house design and an interior of beautiful furniture emphasizes both straight lines and curves and features elaborate carving and woodturning, this style being one of the first to imitate Asian design elements with luxuriant wood panelling and housing a collection of impressive family portraits, delicate china and amazing furniture. Gunby Hall was originally built in 1700 for Sir William Massingberd, 2nd Baronet, on the site of another house once belonging to a family called Gunby, with further additions being added to the building by other members of the family through the ages. The last residing family member, Lady Montgomery-Massingberd (1873–1963), who married Archibald Montgomery, creating a surname change, made the decision with other trustees of the estate in 1944 to hand over the Hall and estate to the National Trust due to there being no direct heir, that the huge costs to run, especially the main building, Historical Houses Gunby Hall © Imogen Leahy © National Trust, Steven Tune Historical Houses Gunby HallLINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 57 HISTORICAL HOUSES © Imogen Leahy were not possible and also to prevent the hall being demolished to make way for an extension to a local RAF runway. Through the ages the Massingberd family had many connections with a variety of very influential people of the day including: Rudyard Kipling, an English novelist poet, and journalist who created the famous ‘Jungle Book’ duology, Charles Darwin, an English naturalist, geologist and biologist, widely known for his contributions to evolutionary biology, the Wedgewood family, noted potters and founders of the eponymous pottery company, previously mentioned Lord Tennyson, Poet Laureate during much of Queen Vicotria’s reign – all visitors. Bennett Langton, James Boswell and Dr Johnson were also regular visitors too with a signed copy of Boswell’s famous book, ‘The Life of Dr Johnson’, still in the library, alongside paintings by the famous portrait and fantasy painter, Joshua Reynold’s, and a grand piano housed in the Music Room played by Ralph Vaughan Williams who wrote ‘In the Fen Country’ based around Lincolnshire’s fen area and creator of many other famous songs and orchestral pieces. Outside, in the traditional English garden, there’s an ancient dovecote, a hidden loveseat, listed clocktower, carriage house and stables, all in the 1,500 acres of the estate including 100- acres of parkland created in the style of the famous Lancelot “Capability” Brown. St Peter’s Church, rebuilt on © Imogen Leahy© Imogen Leahy© National Trust, Steven Tune © Imogen Leahy 58 Á58 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HISTORICAL HOUSES medieval foundations in the 1870s, is also still accessible through the Hall’s gardens and remains the active Parish Church of Gunby with a service once a month - but it was when some of the land was supposedly sold in the 19th century to keen sailor, Aldred Lumley, the 10th Earl of Scarbrough, alongside the expansion of the railways and demands of tourists wanting to explore the largely untouched Lincolnshire coast that the fishing village of Skegness, with only 500 residents at the time, started to grow into today’s bustling and popular town. Apart from Gunby Hall and the dispersal of the land from it assisting in the creation of Skegness, another unique fact is that Hall is allegedly haunted due to a brutal murder that occurred during Sir William Massingberd’s residency in the late 1800s, as he fell upon his daughter (or wife, the story can vary) who was about to run away with one of the servants she’d fallen in love with. The night the lovers were due to flee, Sir William hid and shot the servant dead, dragging the body through the grounds and thrown into the pond, known as the Ice Pond (which can be seen by following the ‘Gunby Ice House Pond Walk’) gaining this name as during wintertime ice would be collected from the pond and stored in the Ice House (no longer accessible or visible due to it being overrun by the undergrowth), and then used in summer to refrigerate a multitude of food stuffs. Word of this murder was soon gossiped about by the locals where they whispered that Gunby Hall was cursed from then on and the murdered servant’s ghost seen haunting the same path, eternally waiting for his lover by the pond. Overall, Gunby Hall is the quintessence of Englishness, a house of cultural connections, a haven for wildlife in the many gardens, home to a curious heritage from the 1700s plus many interesting stories - it is not a place to be missed and one to be proud of today in our wonderful county of Lincolnshire.
