INTERVIEW WITH… B orn in 1945, near Middlesbrough, Roy left school at 14 years old without any qualifications, “mum and dad divorced, dad brought another woman home with 4 kids, I couldn’t stand it so left home and was sleeping in a fishing boat in Redcar!” Moving from job-to-job as a steel works apprentice, electrician, van driver, painter, fruit and veg seller and after a brief stint in the Merchant Navy, Roy was arrested and did 2 years in Portland Borstal in 1963 for petty theft, then a short stint in jail. After that, in 1971, Roy found a manager who encouraged him to perform more blue-comedy taking the building site mentality and banter on to the stage so he left the comedic trio he was involved with ‘Alcock and Brown’, using the surnames of the first British pilots to make a non-stop transatlantic flight in 1919 and so wearing flying goggles on stage which Roy continues to do today. Solo, coming second on the 1970s TV talent show ‘New Faces’ as Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown, so called as Roy shares, “I was shouted at being called spud, tubs, fatty - so decided to call myself Chubbs/chubby to get the line in first to see if it stopped it ….it did !!!!” He also began developing his image wearing a more clown-like stage costume, still with a leather flying helmet and goggles, and adding his now trademark multi- coloured patchwork suit. In the 1990s Roy appeared in Lincolnshire based Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown is a unique comedian with humour covering forthright social comedy, some profanities and a dislike for political-correctness, but it was only after Roy, real name of Royston Vasey, was sent to jail and read a book there by the late, great Bob Hope, and then after his release saw Ken Dodd perform live, was he inspired to want to try stand-up comedy. Roy ‘Chubby’ BrownLINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 75 INTERVIEW WITH… films, did voice over work and acted, signing with Universal Pictures to produce a home video. Due to the controversial nature of his Roy’s live shows they were only occasionally seen on television, so Roy agreed to release concerts annually every Christmas going on to sell 250,000 copies. Roy then dipped his toe in the music field with one of his best-known songs “Living Next Door to Alice (Who the F**k is Alice?)”, a cover version of “Living Next Door to Alice” by Smokie, selling 400,000 copies and peaking at number 3 in August 1995. “Smokie were looking for someone who could make a swear word sound funny, I was good friends with their drummer Steve Pinnell and the rest is history”, says Roy. Sadly in 2002 Roy was diagnosed with throat cancer and had vocal cords removed, leaving him with 1 remaining vocal cord, which he takes extra care of, resulting in him writing his autobiography in 2006 and publishing his memoirs in 2011 as he has to rest his voice whilst not on stage. Whatever you think of Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown he has certainly brought colour and controversy to the comedy world and works hard to keep his show current. When not onstage Roy enjoys the old rectory he bought 21 years ago in the countryside outside Tetney, near Grimsby, he loves his life in Lincolnshire today with partner Helen, whom he met when she asked to have a photo taken with him after a performance and it was love at first sight. She has been with him ever since and had two of Roy’s seven children, Reece and Amy. Sadly Roy lost a son, Martin, in 2019, unsure of the cause of death, although Martin struggled with drugs. Roy’s therapy and hobbies include playing drums and piano, writing songs, creating new comedy material and he especially loves walking around north Thoresby and the Wolds as well as along the beautiful Lincolnshire coast and mixing with the locals, “the Lincolnshire people who are lovely, kind, caring and very special.” Roy still has ambition at the age of 78 years to write a theme tune/song that’s used for a film/TV series/soap and to continue to tour because, ”I just love the sound of laughter, if I write something, say it in my show and people laugh, there’s no greater thrill.” By Jilly Day For information on Roy ‘Chubby Brown’s’ forthcoming gigs go to - www.roychubbybrown.biz where you will find confirmation/ticket information about gigs on: Saturday 25th November 2023 - Hull Saturday 23rd December 2023 - Doncaster Saturday 13th January 2024 - Lincoln 76 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20 Sort out your budget by calling in loans, paying off outstanding debts and generally giving your life a major de-clutter. Officers raced to the Seascape Cafe after receiving a report from a concerned member of the public of a “mass killing.” However upon arriving, expecting a nightmare, they instead found a relaxed group meditating. A passerby had mistaken the participants laying on the floor in a dark room, eyes closed, for dead. Following the incident, the cafe posted on Facebook: “If any one heard the mass of police sirens in Chapel St Leonard’s at 9:30pm last night then please be reassured. They were on their way to the Observatory after someone had reported a mass killing in our building, having seen several people laying on the floor, which actually turned out to be the Yoga Class in meditation. Thank you to Lincolnshire Police for their prompt response. I can’t imagine for one moment what would have been going through their minds on the way. Dear General Public, please be mindful that the Observatory has lots of Yoga classes happening in the evenings. We are not part of any mad cult or crazy clubs.” Triumphant treehouse A treehouse built by a father for his daughter’s birthday has been saved from demolition in Grimsby. Planning officers had called for the two storey treehouse, which took years of organising, to be pulled down over road safety concerns. The father, however, has successfully argued his case to councillors, who granted retrospective planning permission for the structure, constructed of reclaimed timber. In the meeting a councillor said the treehouse exemplified “Great British eccentricity.” The elaborate build includes a main platform, climbing wall, bridge, stairs and a zip wire - certainly a child’s dream. watercooler 78 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.net Have we missed anything? Having only opened its doors in April, the club is said to have attracted more than 1,000 members, and first saw controversy and concern from police and local councillors in July because of a three day ‘Swingathon’ event. The landlords of the venue have now brought the club’s lease to an end for not complying with certain conditions, including blacking out windows, though the businessman says only blinds were installed for the privacy of members.
