J ust because the sun isn’t beaming down much anymore, doesn’t mean that it’s not there. There’s less UVB rays around this time of year, certainly, but studies have shown that there’s still enough to damage skin, so you need to make sure you protect against it. If you don’t want to be using sunscreen every time you venture out, then try to arm yourself with a moisturiser with a decent level of SPF. It’s worth remembering that we do need a certain amount of sunlight on our skin to release vital vitamin D inside the body, so you won’t want to block out the sun all time. Often, it’s not what people aren’t doing for their skin, but rather the things that they are doing are wrong. If you’ve just grabbed any old moisturiser off the shelf and hope it works, but found you need to apply it multiple times a day, or find your face is oily after a few hours, then you need to change your routine ASAP. The easiest method to discover which skin type you have is to simply cleanse your face as normal, and then forgo any moisturiser until about noon. Whether or not your skin ends up oily, or if your face feels tight, you’ll now know your skin type and, therefore, can select a product perfectly suited to your skin’s needs. When it comes to oily skin, for example, you’ll want a matte moisturiser, while those with dry skin will require something more hydrating. It’s possible that your dry skin might, in fact, be some form of eczema, for which you’ll want to seek a dermatologist’s advice and recommendations. One of the very best things you can do for your skin is also one of the cheapest and simplest – drink plenty of water. You’ve probably heard time and again how the human body is mostly made up of water, so it serves to follow that it requires a lot of hydration to function and look its very best. If you only take one piece of advice from this article, let it be this one. While some people can happily quaff pints of water throughout the day, it can be more difficult for some who simply can’t get over the blandness. Fortunately, there’s plenty of ways to make water more appealing. The most obvious is using squash or cordials (although you should watch the sugar levels) and, of course, tea. By swapping out your usual black tea and coffee for green tea or a herbal variety, you’re not only hydrating but adding precious vitamins and antioxidants. Plus, you’re cutting down on the caffeine, which can only be a good thing. For those with busy lifestyles who forget to keep their fluids up, try keeping a reusable water bottle in the car, or to hand at all times. Of course, there’s always professional treatments that can help. Although social distancing measures have transformed many beauty parlous and salons, they’re still very much open for business. By opting for professional treatments now, your skin will look amazing in time for Christmas and the new year. The pandemic means we won’t be able to celebrate with quite the same numbers as normal, but it’s still worth putting the effort in, if only for yourself. 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 02/11/2020 14:27 Page 2Next >
