That’s fine; there’s time aplenty yet. While it can be tempting to just order online from the megalithic company that is Amazon, spare a thought for your local shops in Lincolnshire this year and try to spend with them if you can. If it helps, you won’t have to worry about your goods being lost or damaged on delivery, and local businesses are also far more likely to actually pay the tax they’re meant to. In the end it’s all about supporting your local community though, and that’s a theme running through this issue – from our feature on helping your family grow old gracefully, to an interview with the Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Air Ambulance, and we of course cover Remembrance Day and the lives of those bravely lost in protecting our freedoms. Christmas may be soon, but for now it’s November, so wrap up warm, put on the fire or stove, and enjoy some warm, wintry food. Good reading, as always. Lauren Swales and Jack Lamyman lost their unborn son Teddy to a miscarriage in June when Lauren was four months pregnant. Together with their nine-year-old daughter Polly, they started a fundraising campaign to install a ‘letters to heaven’ post box for the memorial area in the crematorium grounds. The post box gives bereaved families somewhere to post messages, drawings, birthday and Christmas cards to their loved ones. Jack and Lauren said they’d seen similar post boxes in other areas and thought it might help other bereaved families who are coming to terms with the loss of a child. Lauren said: “We’ve never lost a loved one as close to us before Teddy. This is going to help us a lot and we hope it will help other families who have lost a baby or child.” Five Lincolnshire towns are on a list of 55 revealed by the Government who’ll share in a £1.1 billion levelling up investment as part of a long-term plan for towns that have been overlooked and taken for granted. Under the new approach people in Boston, Skegness, Spalding, Grimsby, and Scunthorpe, rather than Whitehall-based politicians, will be put in charge, and given the tools to change their town’s long-term future. They will: Receive a ten-year £20 million endowment-style fund to be spent on local people’s priorities, like regenerating local high streets and town centres or securing public safety. Set up a Town Board to bring together community leaders, employers, local authorities, and the local MP, to deliver the Long-Term Plan for their town and put it to local people for consultation. Use a suite of regeneration powers to unlock more private sector investment by auctioning empty high street shops, reforming licensing rules on shops and restaurants, and supporting more housing in town centres. New homes are coming to Louth after developer Charterpoint received outline planning permission to build up to 90 new properties on a 12-acre site off Daisy Way. East Lindsey District Council has approved the outline application for a mix of one, two, three and four bedroom homes, plus a children’s play area, surface water attenuation ponds, wildflower meadows, sustainable drainage and an amenity lawn for communal informal recreation. The site is an extension of the popular Westfield Park. Adrian Goose, CEO of Charterpoint, said: “We are very pleased to have received outline planning permission for this site on the edge of Louth. It will provide additional much-needed, attractive housing for individuals and families in an area close to the services and amenities that the town offers. “Charterpoint has extensive experience of delivering quality schemes and we look forward to drawing up detailed designs for this site and extending the popular community that we have created at Westfield Park.” © stock.adobe.com/ Gabriel Verdeta latest news Planning permission granted for housing development near LouthPort of Grimsby becomes London for new drama The Port of Grimsby has been transformed into London to feature in the Netflix drama Bodies, a part sci-fi, part murder mystery series. It’s part of a drive by ABP to generate an income stream from film and television work, and saw the port taken over by the production for a month as the location was transformed in to 1940s London, including the transformation of one building into Aldgate East tube station. Other buildings were transformed into period shops and houses. Simon Bird, regional director of the Humber, said: “It’s great to see our Port of Grimsby being used by film and television production companies. The historic quarter is attracting a lot of interest from location managers and producers who like the authenticity and character of the place. We hope this is the start of a new venture for the area.” The port over the years has already hosted many productions from an episode of Wheeler Dealers to the films Three Day Millionaire and Atonement. Students from Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) are celebrating after creating and launching the hit song, ‘Feels Like Home’ following a few visits from music producers, Billen Ted, to collaborate and record with the students on campus. The melody originated from three King’s Magna Middle School students and the lyrics came from thoughts the students had about the school. QE College student, Eden, sang the lead vocals and Oliver provided a saxophone solo for the bridge. Other QE students from Years 11-13 played the instrumental whilst students from Years 6-13 provided the backing vocals. For the music video, three Year 12 students choreographed the dance routine. Daniel Machin, Principal of QE, is thrilled with the song: “We’re always looking for stand-out opportunities for our talented students. The song is a credit to the QE community, and it is a joy to see younger students in Chapter House singing and dancing to the song and being inspired by our older students.” Students create and release hit song Construction partners come together to help fulfill Lincolnshire charity’s new HQ project Landscape architecture practice, Influence Landscape Planning & Design, is bringing together volunteer construction and professional services partners to deliver fit-out works for Lincolnshire charity Naomi’s Garden. Louth-based Naomi’s Garden, which provides conductive education and special education needs consultancy, has been raising funds to find a new HQ having outgrown its current centre in Manby. The charity raised enough funds to secure a new property on Manby Park, but is continuing to fundraise to turn the new building – previously a motorcycle shop – into a fit-for-purpose facility, where it can deliver its lifechanging services to more people. The construction partners will be working together to completely transform the premises into Naomi’s Garden’s forever home. Works include raising floors, installing ramps, new windows and doors, and complete interior decoration. When complete, the new centre will enable the charity to extend its working hours, provide group sessions and create a dynamic learning environment for all no matter what their disability, resulting in supporting 50% more adults and children each year. The building will also give them the option to run group sessions and be used for wider community use. Gold award status recognises those attractions that have scored highly across the board, and Lincoln Castle is one of only four venues in the whole of the East Midlands to receive the award this year. Cllr Lindsey Cawrey, executive member for culture at Lincolnshire County Council, said “Lincoln Castle truly outperforms in the tourism world. Earlier this year it was revealed to have been England’s most visited free castle in 2022, and now the unforgettable days out and exciting events it offers have been recognised with this Gold Award from VisitEngland. “Alongside our other culture and heritage sites across the city and beyond, Lincoln Castle attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and in turn supports the visitor economy of Lincoln and Lincolnshire. For a sector that is struggling, nationally, to recover from the effects of the pandemic and an ongoing cost of living crisis, it’s important we celebrate Lincoln Castle’s success as an opportunity to entice more people to enjoy our beautiful county.” latest news © stock.adobe.com/Piranhi North East Lincolnshire named as one of country’s first ‘Heritage Places’ North East Lincolnshire has been named as one of the UK’s initial nine ‘Heritage Places’ by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, securing priority investment for the next 10 years. With 11 more areas to be announced, in total there is a dedicated funding pot of £200m for North East Lincolnshire and the other 19 areas between now and 2033. The 20 places have been chosen based on their ‘heritage needs, opportunities and potential’. Cllr Hayden Dawkins, North East Lincolnshire Council’s Cabinet member for Culture and Heritage, said: “We are delighted to have been selected as a ‘Heritage Place’ and look forward to continuing to work closely with the Heritage Fund to support our communities to explore their heritage. “It is amazing when you stop and consider the dedication and enthusiasm being displayed by a growing number of people and organisations in North East Lincolnshire – all who have a desire to see us all enjoy arts, culture and heritage and also learn and grow. Everyone here at the Council thanks all those involved, and we are excited to see what the future brings.” Councils sign employment pledge for older workers The three councils which make up the South & East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership have signed the Age-friendly Employer Pledge, a nationwide programme run by the Centre for Ageing Better. The pledge shows a commitment by all three councils – Boston Borough, South Holland and East Lindsey – to improve work for people in their 50s and 60s, recognising their value and expertise and to help make the workplace even more age-friendly. Nationally, most people are working later in life but older workers can often face prejudice and are overlooked. At the same time, the job market is changing with many sectors struggling with skills and labour shortages. In signing the pledge, the partnership recognises that older workers are often key to filling these gaps. Cllr Anne Dorrian, Leader of Boston Borough Council, said: “It is important that the South & East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership is recognising the value those aged over 50 bring to our workforce. Older workers often bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to teams, and in many instances they become role models to their peers and those just starting out in their careers.” © stock.adobe.com/fizkesAA mmaggiccaal, afffteeer--ddaaarkkk illuuumminaatteeddd tttraaaill 24 NOV–31 DEC Tickets from £15 christmasatbelton.com in partnership with NEW LIGHTS, NEW TRAIL FOR 2023Next >
