Nowadays, people are free to rely on professionals to help them make the changes that make them feel better about themselves. The old adage may be that beauty is what’s on the inside, but we can be our worst critics at times, and if we feel better by making a few alterations to our own bodies, then what is the harm? With society being more open and accepting of this, it should be a freeing moment for those who want to have their treatment, and yet less scrupulous actors have stepped in to take advantage. You don’t have to look far to see horror stories of cosmetic surgery gone wrong. Much of it is happening abroad with young women especially seeking cheap medical treatment in countries such as Turkey, and then having catastrophic side- effects that have in some tragic cases claimed their lives. Does this mean Turkey cannot handle cosmetic surgery effectively? No. As in the UK, there are many licensed and professional surgeons who could provide excellent service and care, but these are not the people that victims of cosmetic surgery incidents are going to. They are seeking cheap alternatives that put their health at risk, and those individuals exist in our country as well, providing less-than- legal care to those who feel the costs may be too high. It goes without saying that cosmetic surgery can be expensive, but that is not without reason. You are paying for the services of a highly trained man or woman to operate on your body, using very delicate tools and expensive treatments – and they are fully insured and trained to not only perform the treatment successfully, but to have knowledge of after-care, and what to do in the unlikely scenario something goes wrong. Better yet, many of them are capable of conducting tests to find out if anything could go wrong long before you try it. Simply put, the extra cost is in many cases being put back into the customer. In the UK, we are fortunate to have such stringent laws that enforce the need for licenses, training and insurance, because these protect not only the patient but the doctor. If something goes wrong in a foreign country with an unlicensed doctor, then you will have few options, whereas treatment here ensures that insurance can step in to provide care, and that’s in the unlikely scenario that something goes wrong in the first place. Given the laws and litigious nature of personal injury in our country, almost any doctor will take time to make sure you’re in the perfect state to receive your treatment, and that nothing can go wrong. The ironic part of all this is that the same people who are travelling abroad to let someone operate on them in another country without any guarantee of professional support would gasp in horror at the thought of having a life-saving operation under those same circumstances, and yet the skills and training are in many ways similar. The best cosmetic surgeons in the UK have almost all served with the NHS and worked within hospitals, and they are fully capable of the work they promise. Cosmetic surgery does carry risks with it, depending on the treatment you have, and those risks can have a huge impact on your life. There really is no excuse for placing those risks in the hands of someone who may not be licensed, and who may not be insured, all because some friends on Facebook had a good experience with them. When it’s your health, you should trust it to a professional. That way, you can get back to feeling good about yourself and enjoying the changes you’ve dreamed of for so long, without having to worry about the horror stories spreading across social media. Don’t take any risks with your body. Speak to a professional. Cosmetic surgery is more common than ever, but so is risking your life with substandard treatments abroad. When it comes to your body, only trust a professional. © stock.adobe.com/Gorodenkoff38 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY LINCOLN HOSPITAL Q&A Tell us about your background and experience as a Cosmetic/Plastic Surgeon I trained and qualified at Guys Hospital in London but it was after completing basic surgical training in Norwich that I realised Plastic Surgery was what I wanted to do. I focused on Plastic Surgery in Swansea and in Exeter as a Registrar, before settling in the East Midlands to complete my Higher Plastic Surgery training whilst gaining experience in all common plastic surgery problems and gaining exposure in Cosmetic Surgery. Whilst assisting several surgeons in these locations I developed an interest in reconstructive breast surgery, which is the majority of my NHS practice. I am a full- time Plastic Surgeon working in the NHS at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and I also offer private consultations and procedures at Lincoln Hospital – Circle Health Group. What is the most common issue that patients present with and need your surgical assistance to solve or overcome? The most common surgical procedure I do is the upper eyelid blepharoplasty, which can be done under local anaesthetic in most cases and is a very well tolerated procedure. Effects of eyelid surgery are very reliable and the improvements are always noticeable. Other procedures that I commonly do, include Breast Augmentation, Breast Uplift, Breast Reduction, Abdominoplasty and Face Lift Surgery. All of these surgeries need to be done under general anaesthetic. How do you reassure apprehensive patients? There are some patients who are very well informed and know exactly what Q&A Lincoln Hospital, Circle Health Group This month we met with Mr Matt Smith, Consultant Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon at Lincoln Hospital - Circle Health Group, to learn more about cosmetic surgery and dispel some of the myths surrounding it. they need. Sometimes that can be straight forward but at other times patients may be less well informed than they think so it is important to provide them with accurate information and manage their expectations on what is achievable. On the other side of the spectrum, many patients are more apprehensive and less clear about their needs and further discussion is necessary to focus them on what surgery they might benefit from. Some of these patients may have underlying medical issues and these medical issues need to be considered and discussed. Medical problems are often why patients are apprehensive, particularly if they are related to previous surgical interventions. Patients can also be apprehensive about general anaesthetics which for the majority of patients are very safe and they need to be reassured that provided they don’t have any significant underlying problems then the anaesthetic should not be a problem for them. If they do have medical issues which may influence the anaesthetic, then I will discuss this with my anaesthetist. When necessary I arrange a consultation for the patient with the anaesthetist to discuss any concerns. Both the patient and the anaesthetist need to be fully aware of the whole situation. What do you think are the most common misconceptions about cosmetic surgery? There are a lot of plastic surgery stories in the media, about celebrities LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 39 LINCOLN HOSPITAL Q&A having cosmetic surgery, some successful but many are unsuccessful and that does influence the general public about the dangers and benefits of cosmetic surgery. It is always important to understand what the patient desires from their surgery. To achieve success, for both the patient and the surgeon, the improvements or corrections carried out surgically, must match the expectations of the patient. As a surgeon, I have detailed discussions with my patient to understand exactly what those expectations are and the patient needs to be aware of what exactly the surgical possibilities and outcomes are likely to be. This will include showing pictures of my outcomes and clarifying exactly which improvements can be made. Sometimes it is necessary to tell the patient that their expectations cannot be met as it isn’t surgically possible. I am very frank with patients. Past medical history must always be taken into consideration. I am always clear with patients that there is no immediate rush to have surgery and that it needs to be done when it is safe to do so. In addition to medical issues, there may be social issues which need to be addressed prior to any surgical intervention. With all patients it is essential to make them aware of the recovery that is necessary and the importance of taking time out to do that properly. Risks can often be misconceived so these are covered in detail from the outset, to ensure my patients are fully informed, well prepared, and able to deal with the rare and uncommon situation when complications do arise. What are your thoughts on patients having cosmetic surgery abroad and what should they take into consideration if they are contemplating this? I have always had very serious reservations about patients going abroad for surgery. It can be extremely difficult to verify a surgeon’s credentials, experience and their results. Patients are often ill informed about their post- operative care and possible post-surgery issues. I would never advise patients to fly for at least 4 weeks, particularly when the surgery itself has taken 4 hours. This is because flying can cause DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and pulmonary embolism. I have seen several patients recently who have had to go straight to an Emergency Department on arrival home, in order to deal with infections post- surgery. I have also looked after several patients who have been abroad for breast enlargement surgery and I have had to remove their implants due to issues with the surgery. For the sake of saving some money, I would ask yourself, is it really worth the risk?
