< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING Electric Car makers are investing more in their electric car line ups as the petrol and diesel ban nears, and demand for greener options grows. resolutions 60-63.qxp_Layout 1 27/11/2020 14:26 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 61 COUNTY MOTORING Pressure continues to mount on car brands for improved environmental credentials. Given a 2018 Government report highlighted that 33% of all carbon dioxide emissions stem from the transport sector, this is unsurprising. Concerns are also penetrating the production process, from materials to power used, with carbon-neutral production becoming a key aim for manufacturers. While car makers are pushed to achieve zero emissions, the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) is escalating, with electric car sales tripling in the UK this year, and industry investment in 2019 worth £54 billion. This will only build further as the sale of new petrol and diesel cars are to be banned in the UK by 2035 - this is expected to include hybrids. Additionally, reports indicate that the Prime Minister will be bringing this date forward to 2030, to mirror other European countries. Car makers are pressing ahead with pure-electric car line-ups, investing millions to bring new models to market, and announcing sustainability strategies. Most recently, Bentley revealed plans to go fully electric by 2030, introducing its first fully electric model in 2025 (Bentley’s first cradle to grave fully carbon neutral car), and switch its model range to offer only plug-in hybrid or battery electric cars by 2026. Furthermore the Volkswagen Group brand also intends to be end-to- end carbon neutral across its manufacturing by 2030 and plans to reduce factory environmental impact by 75% by 2025. Bentley has already transformed its 80-year-old headquarters Bentley Beyond 100 strategy 62 Á 60-63.qxp_Layout 1 27/11/2020 14:26 Page 262 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING into the UK’s single carbon neutral luxury car factory. Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bentley Motors, said: “Within a decade, Bentley will transform from a 100 year old luxury car company to a new, sustainable, wholly ethical role model for luxury.” The moves come as part of the ‘Beyond 100 strategy’. The wider Volkswagen Group meanwhile is committed to becoming climate neutral by 2050 and has created the ‘goTOzero’ sustainability strategy to achieve this. The group is to invest €33 billion in electric mobility in the coming five years as well as launch around 75 new electric models by 2029. BMW is also significantly increasing its electric car offering, and under its ‘Power of Choice’ sustainability plan has committed to selling over seven million plug-in hybrid and pure-electric vehicles by 2030, with two-thirds of them all- electric variants. As a result of the expansion of electric mobility, emissions produced by BMW Group vehicles per kilometre driven will be reduced by around 40 percent by the year 2030. Additionally the brand says it will have 25 electrified models on roads by 2023, with over half of these fully electric, and expects electrified cars to account for between 15-25% of the company’s global sales before 2025. Further, from this year all of the BMW Group’s production locations worldwide will be supplied with 100 percent green electricity, the company will also increase the proportion of secondary materials used in their new vehicles, and the brand has entered into a partnership with Off Grid Energy to create a sustainable, second-life solution for BMW and MINI electric vehicle batteries. Mercedes-Benz meanwhile is driving forward its ‘Electric First’ strategy. In under 20 years the brand is planning to make its new car fleet CO2 neutral, with over 50% of sales a result of plug-in hybrids or battery electric vehicles by 2030. Joining the Climate Pledge, the brand is targeting zero-emissions by 2040, which includes the manufacture, use and end of life stage. A new line up of six EVs is to be unveiled next year and as the electrified portfolio is expanded investments in combustion engine development will decline, with the number of combustion engine variants decreasing by 70% by 2030. Moreover an expanded agreement between Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz will mean the former, which does not currently sell any electrified cars, will be able to electrify 20% of its fleet by 2024. The agreement will see Mercedes increase its stake in Aston Martin to 20% (from 2.6%), while 60-63.qxp_Layout 1 27/11/2020 14:27 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 63 COUNTY MOTORING Aston Martin will gain access to a wider range of Mercedes components that will be used in product launches to 2027, securing access to technologies including electric and hybrid powertrains. Numerous other car makers have made and are hitting commitments to electric vehicles, minimising emissions, and becoming carbon neutral, from Honda planning to electrify all the cars it sells in the European market by 2022, to Volvo and Polestar revealing they will reduce fleet emissions beyond their joint CO2 target for 2020, with Volvo looking to become a climate neutral company by 2040 with a climate plan that goes past addressing tailpipe emissions through electrification, in tackling carbon emissions in its manufacturing network and wider operations, its supply chain and through recycling and reuse of materials. In this special edition of By the Watercooler, we bring you three stories that have emerged over the lockdown that have made us smile and, we hope, will also bring you joy. Three guesses what the word of the year is It should come as no surprise that Collins Dictionary has declared ‘Lockdown’ as its world of the year. Before 2020, the word might have cropped up in fiction or a prison documentary, but now it’s all too familiar. Collins said that the word “encapsulates the shared experience of billions of people”. That’s putting it mildly. To put that in perspective, more than 250,000 usages of the word were registered during 2020 compared to 4,000 last year. Unsurprisingly, there was also a sharp rise in the use of pandemic-related words such as ‘social distancing’ and ‘key worker’. By the © Shutterstock/Indre Pau © Shutterstock/In Green © Shutterstock/Krakenimages.com Not so lost after all A Lincolnshire walker has landed herself in hot water after she was spotted heading home despite the rescue teams searching for her. The woman – unnamed in media reports – called police to say that she was lost in the Peak District mid-afternoon in October. Five rescue teams were then sent in and spent the next five hours searching for her. Their efforts were only called off after the woman was spotted driving home on CCTV. Why the woman wouldn’t have called to say she had made it to safety and was alright remains a mystery. If you get lost, by all means reach out for help but, for heaven’s sake, let the emergency services know if you find your own way to safety. GizFab, a Skegness company that sells car parts, have colluded with a customer to help hide his latest order from his wife by making the package look as if it contained male sex toys. To achieve the desired effect, the company plastered the packaging with explicit male sex toy images and stickers indicating what was supposedly inside. It also came with an invoice saying it contained… well, something we can’t repeat in this family friendly magazine – the same reason we aren’t including the actual images. It’s rather an extreme length to go to lie to a spouse and to hide some spending. Communication, as ever, is key to a healthy relationship.
