< Previous10 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES This month’s featured property is full of historic charm. character Full of LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 11 HOMES N estled upon a private plot of 1.5 acres in the town of Market Rasen is Clare Lodge — a striking character property built by a timber merchant in the 1850s. Despite its long history, being so adored has meant the home has only belonged to three or four families since construction, with the current owners spending the last 19 years here. “The house really stood out to us,” the owners shared, “as a period property that was in need of renovating but still held so many original features that have been lost from a lot of homes of this age.” During their time at the residence the owners have completed plenty of work, from replacing the heating to converting an outbuilding into a cinema room. “One interesting thing we noticed is that on the walls, as they’ve been decorated, there are the dates of when a previous family had completed work, from the 1920s and 1970s. Before we moved in that was the last time the property had undergone any work. So when we purchased it, the home was still full of 1960s and 1970s decor.” Within walking distance to Market Rasen’s many amenities, Clare Lodge offers an expanse of private grounds that makes it quite unusual for a town house, standing proudly amidst extensive tiered formal lawns, vegetable and topiary gardens, an orchard and more. One approaches the unique 12 Á12 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES abode via electric gates which open onto a gravelled driveway, providing ample off-road parking for multiple vehicles. Touring the property, an impressive formal entrance welcomes you inside with hardwood full-length double feature doors and decorative tiled flooring guiding you into the reception hall, with its marble feature fireplace and ornate dado rail. A large return staircase rising to the first floor acts as a focal point here, with a beautiful roof lantern skylight. Stripped pine doors lead to the rest of the ground floor, with the lounge sitting to the left. A great entertaining space, with dual aspect views across formal gardens, the lounge hosts two full-length sash bay windows, two full-length sash windows each with original shutters, exposed floorboards, picture rail, feature panelling, decorative ceiling roses and a marble feature fireplace. Returning to the reception hall and crossing over to the right, the owners’ favourite room can be found. The sitting room holds a mahogany carved feature fireplace, picture rail, a feature internal window looking into the living kitchen, and double full-length sliding hardwood shutters which open to stained glass and leaded patterned windows looking onto the front formal lawns. “The art deco style stained glass windows are what make this room our favourite,” the owners said. “What was quite exciting when we were doing work here is that when we took the wallpaper off around the top of the room, we found an original frieze that matches the stained glass windows. There were parts of it where the electrics had been run in where the frieze had been damaged, so we brought in some heritage experts to patch it up and repair where it had been destroyed. Now, around the top of the sitting room LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 13 is delightful ornate painting.” From here one can step into a lobby offering access to the living kitchen and breakfast room. Exploring the breakfast room first, one will notice decorative tiled flooring, a feature inglenook fireplace with exposed brick mantle and flagstone hearth, a skylight, inset glazed full- length windows with shutters looking to the courtyard garden, exposed rustic beams, and doors to the rear hallway and an understairs storage recess cupboard, as well as a door leading outside and bi-fold doors to a utility boot room. Childhood memories T here’s nary a person who has grown up in Lincolnshire (or anywhere in the UK) that won’t recognise the art on these pages, coming from such famous names as Roald Dahl, Sir Quentin Blake and Anita Jeram. Recognisable from books, cover art and media, the names all carry a certain weight with them. Roald Dahl was born in Wales in 1916 and had a distinguished career as a fighter pilot and a diplomat in WWII before settling down after and becoming more famously known for books such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, James and the Giant Peach and many, many more. It was Quentin Blake who worked with Roald Dahl and illustrated many of his book covers, along with other authors like Russell Hoban, Joan Aiken, and Michael Rosen. He’s also illustrated classic books such as A Christmas Carol. Anita Jeram is known for her illustrations in the book Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney, which has been translated into over 27 languages across the world. Anita’s covers are a labour of love, and she reminisces that she often wants to cry whenever she reads the book, and that the story reminds her of her son who used to play these games with her before bed.
