A state-of-the-art school for 60 students with special educational needs and disabilities has opened in Scunthorpe.
Trent View College has been built on the town’s on West Common Lane at a cost of £12m, and will help students develop vital skills in a range of subjects, including cooking, the arts and technology.
The college includes a horticulture area, catering kitchen, a health and beauty workshop and sensory rooms.
It is a world first in that it will be the first ‘passivhaus’ – an internally recognised standard of environmentally friendly building – with a hydrotherapy pool.
The new school was developed by the council together with the Government’s Department for Education and the Wellspring Academy Trust.
Cllr Julie Reed, cabinet member for children and families, said: “As a parent of children with special needs I know how important and valuable it is to have a facility like this locally.
“It means young adults will be able to stay near their family and friends, developing important skills that will prepare them for adulthood and give them the best possible start in their adult lives. Finally seeing this vision come together is amazing – Trent View College is second to none.”
