Mary Shelley’s classic gothic horror, Frankenstein, takes to the stage in a brand-new adaptation by local writer, Laura Turner.
The Asylum Players’ autumn show hits The Blue Room this October and we’ve got something very special for you. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein adapted for the stage by acclaimed local writer Laura Turner. Directed by Stephen Gillard, this new take on the classic horror story will have you talking long after the curtain closes.
The Blue Room is an iconic historical venue situated in uphill Lincoln near the Castle. It’s played host to many critically acclaimed shows and events and is now branching out into an exciting era of new writing and challenging theatrical adaptation.
On the 26th, 27th and 28th of October this year, join us for a story you know presented in a way you don’t.
Steve Gillard, Artistic Director of The Asylum Players and director of Frankenstein, said: “When Laura approached me with the concept of Frankenstein, taking Victor Frankenstein and re-casting the character as Victoria, I was immediately hooked. Frankenstein is a story about the creation of life, of scientific ambition and the tragedy of rejection, both familial and professional.
“What happens when you put that through the lens of the female experience? Answer: a whole hell of a lot. There is so much to look at and discuss – why hasn’t this been done already? I am incredibly excited to bring this ‘monster’ of the literary and theatrical world to our stage.”
Written by Mary Shelley in 1818, Frankenstein tells the story of the eponymous scientist and their desire to find the essence of creation through forbidden science. Through their studies they bring to life the famous creature of the tale – to horrific and tragic endings.
Shelley wrote the story of Frankenstein when she was eighteen, as part of a competition between her husband, Percy Shelly, their friend Lord Byron and herself. Regarded as possibly the first true science-fiction story and a masterwork of literature, it has never been out of print since its initial publication over two hundred years ago.
This new production, featuring many of the stalwarts of The Asylum Players, promises a thrilling, unnerving evening that will leave you talking about the show for days to come.
